Hi where we live we have a field opposite the house our landlord owns the field. I know that they used to keep horses in the field but nothing for a few years. Where i keep my horses the field owner does not charge me. I spend about £15 in petrol. I am sure my landlord will charge me for renting the field but there would be no petrol cost.
I was wondering those that have kids and have there children at home do you have more time to ride? My husband goes running a lot and we dont always have time for me to ride and him to run around work etc. Do you get everythig done easier when they are at home or was it easier when they wee away from home? Which do you prefer? Sorry they might seem silly questions i might have to convince the hubby from going from free to paying for a field!!!
Thanks for any help

It's hard to answer. I have the horses at home and my son. He is now 5 and at school so I ride when he is at school. I work Mon & Tue but mum chips in so I can get to ride as soon as I come home. He is not old enough for me to ride if there is only him and me there. I have just brought one of the horses back into work, he has been out with injury from last April. He was being a complete prat in the school at home - screaming & bucking etc so I have moved him to a friends yard for a couple of weeks until he settles back into work. It take me about 2hrs to get there, ride him, muck out etc. This has worked a treat he is being an angel, I rode him the first day I put a saddle on him and he was a sweetie.

I just have to be a little more organised as everything has to be done in one go rather than spread out throughout the day if I need to do other things.

Hope this makes sense.

I wouldnt ride if it was just myself and the kids. I am looking for more time to ride. My husband wrks shifts and i work around his shifts but i can ride once kids have gone to bed in the summer. So at least i wouldnt have to worry about travel time. Although not a huge length of time to get to where they are but it would save some time. I keep thinking things like poo picking i could do that while hubby is working as the kids can play in the garden.

I think i will ask just to see how much it would cost. That might help make up my mind before i suggest to hubby

Before I had my yard I used to keep my horses at livery and I would take my 5 and 6 year old kids with me and they would either play in the yard or wait in the car if they weren't at school. Sometimes it got really cold so they would be wrapped up in loads of clothes and blankets, but looking back I feel bad! When we moved to our yard we first of all lived in a static caravan for 3 years while we converted the barn and they could stay in the caravan which was in full view of the stables and arena, so much better than the car! Now the barn is converted, they are even closer to the stables and arena, but also they are teenagers so it doesn't matter!
