Just wondering a few things, if someone might be able to help!

Why did you decide to try feeding mag ox, instead of a more expensive calmer, or perhaps you tried it after using one?

How long did it take to see any changes with it ?

Why did you decide to start feeding the mag ox? Recommendations in here, or research on the internet?

I decided to feed magnesium (EA Magnitude) due to reading some research literature on winter nutrition. It mentioned the lack of magnesium available in grass, so I decided to feed it.
It's had the happy 'side effect' of chilling my boy out whilst his grazing is restricted ( ridiculously so!!)
I honestly wish I'd discovered it 4 years ago!!

I feed it for muscle health as well as combating deficiency. I feed a high dose of human grade mag ox two both my horses and I notice significant benefits to both. One because she has a muscle myopathy and the other because she is a formerly mad horse.

I think it depends how severe the deficiency is as to how long it will take to notice a difference. If I cut it out I notice a decline very quickly tho.

I side it first when I was first playing about with the barefoot thing .
I had one who was defiantly calmer on it the rest I saw no difference .
I still give some in summer, it's not the magic bullet for my horses ( perhaps because they get forage plus supplements ) but it's certainly something I would always give a go .

I tried it as a calmer and also to aid their feet, it seems to work on both counts. I give a small amount all year round with slightly more in the spring, it made a huge difference to my boy as he was prone to being a 'silly' at times.
I don't know if it's human grade but it 99.8% pure and much cheaper than magnitude.

I feed it to my cob, it was recommended as part of the feed plan I got done for him from forage plus. Sarah suggested feeding him extra mag ox as he is a very good doer with a history of having been very fat and he gets footy (he is barefoot) easily from anything high in sugar, so she felt he probably has some insulin resistance going on. It does seem to have helped with the footiness, he can now have the odd apple or handful of mollassed chaff without being crippled. He's no calmer on it, but then he didn't need to be.

My horse was home bred so I knew his history but he spooked at everything, and was the most difficult horse I have ever backed. One day I had just got on him, bent over to put my offside foot in the stirrup and he leapt several feet sideways - at something he should have been well used to by then. I had had a soil analysis showing magnesium deficiency and had heard about its effects, and it suddenly clicked. I got magox as the simplest way to top up his magnesium levels, and saw a marked improvement in about 10 days. HTH

I feed Magic which contains Magnesium Oxide and also Magnesium chloride which I read somewhere was even more effect that mag ox. Magnesium Oxide has to be broken down in the stomach before it works on the horse but by the inclusion of magnesium chloride this eliminates the need for break-down which results in a much higher absorption rate. I have put my horse on it for 18 months now and taken him off it twice and each time he has changed charachter so much (spins/spooks/nappiness) that I have put him back on it again. Within 7 or 8 days he is back to his goodself again.

You can feed all these supplements but like my vet said, the truth is revealed when you take them off them.....

Interested in this as yesterday I was reading about Equine America Magnitude. Which mag ox do you use?

I buy it from Pro Earth on ebay, I've been using them for several years and are very reliable (plus there is always a small choccy bar in the parcel ).

Generally the soil and crops grown on it in the SE are very low in magnesium, a balancer can help but it can be a bit of a minefield as certain minerals/vitamins need to balance with each other and others can cancel each other out.

There are a couple of suppliers if you click on the link below, the £5 bag should be enough to see if magnesium helps, it's not quite such a high % as some but a teaspoon or 2 a day should give you an idea in anything from 48hrs to a couple of weeks.

I've found it's pretty much a life saver (well field saver, he wasn't dangerous just daft) as my boy thought nothing of running at pull pelt and not applying the brakes till the last minute and used to rear up at the fence on a regular basis, since magnesium I've only seen it 3 times and it used to happen at least once a week during the spring
