Hi,

Firstly I do apologies I am being extremely nosey. However, I have always wanted a 4x4 and a trailer but haven't been able to afford it till now (fingers crossed). I sincerely hope i haven't offended anyone with the following questions.

I am in the process, fingers cross, to be able to afford an older truck and a newish trailer.

I was wondering what 4x4 you tow with, the reg and how much you paid for it. My budget is approx £5 - £7 k for the 4x4 and approx 2 k for the trailer.

Thanks
Ruth

I've got an L reg LWB Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 turbo, diesel automatic, it had 99000KM on the clock and I paid £3,600 for it - it was in very good condition until I got my hands on it, now it is filthy and full of rubbish

Also, I bought an Ifor 510, about 4 years old and that cost me £2700 - again, it was in almost perfect condition.

You should be able to get something pretty decent with that.

3 yrs ago I sold my little Ford Transit lorry and Suzuki car to switch to a 4x4 and trailer, though still had to take a bit of a loan out to cover the switch.

I paid approx £4k for an old Daihatsu Fourtrak and £1400 for an equally old but in good nick trailer.

The Daihatsu is still going strong, though it's cost me a bit in repairs this year, but I still love it.

I am either looking for a Daihatsu fourtrak or a Mitsubishi. My worries are mainly the amount of money to keep the vehicle on the road and MOTs etc.

MOT is same as a car. PArts can be more expensive epending on make and age. If its an older vehicle find a good local garage to do any work.

E Reg Defender, but incredibly tidy for its age £3,000
1997 ish IW 505, paid £2k for that, have since spent more on it with a new floor and side panel

MOT - well it costs a basic amount, about £50 roughly. How much it costs to get a car through the MOT depends on what it fails on. It could only be a lightbulb or windscreen wipers, but it could be anything from tyres, brakes, exhausts etc etc. You can't really predict that one at all.

We have an old style Shogun that is G reg, which makes it about 17 years old. I see some even older ones driving around locally. So they do last well.
It pulls beautifully and is really nice to drive. It is petrol so NOT used as a run-around, it is a spare vehicle and mostly for my trailer, although it is surprising how often my husband and son choose to take it out.

Parts are more expensive, because it is so old they sometimes have to be shipped in from Japan. A new petrol tank about 6 years ago cost £400. A small part for the brakes was going to cost the same at last year's MOT, but luckily hubby managed to clean up the old part and it passed OK the second time.

My husband is the mechanic, and keeps it going. It cost about £4,000 9 years ago and wasn't very expensive then. Remember about car tax and CO2 tax as well. I don't know how that works, but no doubt will find out when we get the bill.

Land Rover parts are much easier and cheaper to get hold of, but with a LR you must know which model and engine you are getting, because some of the engines were pretty awful and could hardly drag themselves around, let along a trailer as well.
Some gear boxes were bad as well.
Don't have any LR model older than the Defender. I had a series IIa and it was DREADFUL to drive, I used to creeep along at about 20 mph as the steering was so grim. Do some research, buy a LR/What Car book, or 4x4 equivalent

We use Ifor Williams 510 - bought last year for £2,500 and it was 4 years old. Traded my P reg Landrover Discovery 2.5 in as it was not really up to pulling trailer and 2 horses. Got a Mitsubishi Shogun (short wheelbase) 3.2 and it pulls with no effort at all. Paid £11k but it's only 3 yrs old with very low mileage.

I bought a 1995 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 td auto with about 48k miles on the clock for £2250 and an Ifor Williams HB505 for £2150 (it was immaculate and stored in a barn all its life)
I couldn't afford to drive the truck all the time as I do 40 miles a day at about 19 to the gallon so it was ludicrous. Got a 1.9td peugeot 306 for daily use for £900 and it's saved me about £250 a month so far.

This year my K-reg Fourtrak has had to have a new head gasket (brother repaired it for me so parts and minimal labour cost about £180). (Spare-parts shop gave me the gaskets at cost because they'd had them lurking in the shop for 10yrs and were glad to get rid of them!!!!)

Also a new fuel pump - luckily a family member offered to repair that for me too.

Had a new exhaust system recently, that was £200 incl labour from a garage.

Last year I bought 3 new tyres, the garage reckoned the ones I was replacing were the originals.

My car has just gone over 100k miles, and I hope it does another 100k as I love it.

So far parts haven't been hard to find except silly things like wing-mirror glass (Daihatsu couldn't offer just the glass, you were supposed to buy the whole moving arm - £300!) No way, found matching piece of mirror and stuck it on with Super Super glue!!

I've also broken the rear number plate light fascia - estimate for replacing that is another £300. Rediculous for what is just there for show, so I've wrapped tank tape all around it! The number plate light works so it passes the MOT every year like that!

Finally, someone crashed into the back of me at a junction last year. I was stationery at the time. His 4WD was completely crunched. The only damage to my car was that the grill surrounding the rear lights was squashed a bit. I had the chassis and underneath of my car checked and there really was no other damage. Very lucky that was.

A friend had an old style Shogun, E-reg which he got shot of a year ago and reckoned on spending £600 a year on repairs to keep it on the road, so this is the sort of sum I try to save to keep my jallopy going.

I paid £4k for my Daihatsu 3yrs ago, which is the most I've ever spent on a vehicle!!
