Hi guys,

In need of some advice so please bare with me.

I've the vet coming out to both of mine on Monday and things aren't looking good. In summary Luca (5yr old TB) has been found to have a bad back, after a month and a bit off and physio treatment he's if anything getting worse not better. After physio treatment he is showing signs of ataxia and the vet is in her words VERY concerned.

River - (11yr ponio) has been ill for the last 18mths - just came sound and has gone lame again. He's got navicular in both fronts, bi-latteral bone spavin, COPD and a stomach ulcer (alongsode cronic sweet itch). He's also stopped eating again - sure sign somethings up.

My brain is all a fuzz and I need some straight forward questions to ask the vet - as whilst she's great I really need to know whats going on with both! Can you guys think of things I need to ask so far I've got:

re Lu:
- What further investigation can you do?
- If it is nerve damage/nuerological (main suggestion) what are his chances of a full recovery?
- What can have caused this (he was fine one day and the next terrible)

re River:
- If we can't bute because of the ulcer how do we manage his pain levels?
- Does he need a different kind of trim?
- Can we re x-ray his fronts to check whats happening with the navicular?
- What is the chance of him coming sound again?

Thanks guys - my head is a total mess - the vet reassures me its nothing I have done and its a miracle River came right first time around and Lu is a freak accident but I guess I need some moral support - everyone at work is just joking they should be turned into glue!

Sorry for a long rant, a nice jug of pimms and strawberries and cream to all...

Hi

Sorry to hear you are having such back luck at the moment we are in a similar situation ourself. I have found that I thought I was taking everything when they came out to again assess our boy, but by the time I had got home the info I had absorbed was very gappy. My vet was brilliant I wrote some notes and phoned her again and she was happy to run through with me again. So don't panic and if you have questions after the visit, then don't hesitate to ring.

Good luck with everything!

Vets brilliant - as its been going on so long with River she's used to me ringing up and saying - can I just clarify.

Also one of the girls at the yard is going to be there as the day I got River's navicular diagnosis I didn't absorb anything - just panicked so she stays around to listen and explain to me later over a cup of tea when I've stopped panicking...

Can't help but think I'm not meant to have horses!!!

I think your questions are good and it's good you'll have someone there with you. When my friends horse was diagnosed with Navicular (at age 8) I was there and she glazed over.
Maybe ask your friend to take notes so you can look at then later.

Good Luck

Muddy_Grey - thank you not thought of that before - she tends to look at the X Rays etc for me, though I am much calmer these days than when it first started!

Aw hugs hun. I know how you feel (been there, still there, got the tee-shirt. Ho hum).

As M_G says, ask friend to take notes if possible. You could also ask vet to email the answers to your questions - I find it useful

Hope the news somehow gets better.
