hi i had a bad fall last year and hurt my back, had it all sorted at osteopath. Anyway helped out with two horses at my old yard at the weekend, no riding just mucking out etc and ive put my back out again just by mucking out?? Anyway im due to go and see a lady at lunch time who has three horses and needs help and im desperate to be back round horses again but my back is nagging me this morning so maybe i shouldt go ? should i ring her and tell her im not sure my back is up to it /? or go over there and try it all out? Oh i don't know what to do????

Have you been doing any exercise to help your back? You will need to build up the strength in it. It is possible to muck out and not hurt your back - you have to make sure you bend your knees and keep your back straight - use your stomach muscles to support you.

Go and see her and find out how much work will be involved. Glad to hear you're getting back into it again

Well mucking out can be alot of strain on your back because of the twisting etc. I find that if I have been on holiday or not mucked out for a few weeks (Summer time), when I start mucking out again the first few times are sore on my back, it makes it even worse if its cold, I've pulled muscles in my back from when its cold and I've been mucking out. You could always go and say that you will do as much as your back will allow? Then this means you can always stop if it starts twinging?

oh thanks everybody (hi sara!!) where do you get the pro lite thingy?

Sara was just looking after flora and katie for lydia on monday, just that little bit of work did it to me, god im so annoyed!!!!

Hiya, I slipped my disc and did someother strange and painful things to my back about 5 years ago after a fall, I've been often re-damaging it since and needing osteo treatment to fix. This last time Osteo says I need to improve my core muscles alot more otherwise it will keep happening, he reccommended I start Pilates, which i have done and i think it was the best decision possible! I am alot stronger in my back and core muscles and hopefully this is showing in my riding.

ditto the above - I slipped a disc a year and a half ago, and all the physio I've had has focused on building my core strength. I've found keeping active and mucking out every day has helped in my case, but obviously it's different for everyone.

Nina, I'm so pleased to hear you're getting back in to it

Go along to see the lady today and see how it goes.

You should be able to get a Prolite support froma tack shop. I got mine from Sharnford Lodge, but it's worth ringing first to see if they've got them in stock.

The support isn't enough on it's own though - you need to build up the strength by Pilates, swimming or something similar. It really does help.

I'm sure once you build yourself up you'll be fine - maybe explain to the lady and see if you can build up slowly rather than diving straight in?
