For those who saw the worst Christmas post (vet found massive tumour in buzz's mouth on dec 23rd), a quick update.

X-rays on Christmas Eve showed a large mass stretching back into cheek/throat but not connected to dental bone. Biopsy today resulted in some of it being removed by vet (not entirely intentionally), and closer inspection revealed a hard substance - poss bone or tooth - inside, which was very unexpected.

Have a referral to apparently top dental vet surgeon next week, pending results of biopsy.

In the meantime he's fine in himself - on a hay replacer as struggling to chew hay - growth is over the teeth - but otherwise jumping and hacking as normal (rather too fine out hacking today).

This is apparently 1/3 of the visible part of tumour. Poor horse.

That's kind of how I felt from vet really - she was quite excited at finding the hard substance in the middle as it could point to some sort of bone or tooth splinter that's created a growth, but equally it could still be a tumour, with bizarre characteristics. But feel a lot more positive for having a plan now and getting things moving.

Oh wow, poor thing thats hideous! Amazed he's happy hacking! Bless him! Hope he gets better soon!

Me too! Vet said that it doesn't impinge bit at the moment so basically keep on as normal while he's comfortable and judging from how strong he was cantering today, he's pretty comfortable...

Poor buzz that is some lump! The fact that he is so well in himself has to be good and I always think if they find something unexpected and they were thinking the worst.... again that could well be a good sign, sounds like extra tooth growth gone haywire!fingers crossed for the biopsy results and that the surgeon has a game plan.

Wow! Quite a lump, wonder if it is a teratoma, as they can have teeth in them but not sure if horses get them.

Glad everything is more positive and coping well :)

Ick. :)

I think the hard substance could be good news. I knew a horse with a tumour in a sinus that turned out to be a wayward 'tooth' and another horse with what they thought was a scary sarcoid in one ear diagnosed with same. In both cases the mass was removed and all was well. Everything crossed for Buzz.

I was wondering how you were getting on and I am so glad it all seems to be good news at the moment. It's very good news that the mass is not attached to bone and it looks like it wants to come off by itself so hopefully the surgeon will have it out easily. Fingers crossed for you!

Glad it's looking more positive :) Where's he been refered to?
Referred to Rob Pascoe at Bell Equine.

As soon as the sedation wore off last night he realised he'd missed dinner and managed to bust out of his stable in a hunt for food...ain't nothing going to stop that boy thinking about his stomach ;)

Haven't seen or heard of anything like that in a horse before, but it sounds positive at the moment, and will be thinking of you and vibes for a healthy outcome.

Thanks all. Did some research and Rob sounds like he's the man for the job. He's also friends with my practice vet, so they're going to discuss next stage.
Buzz was very perky today and wolfing down everything in sight, so not sure he's in too much discomfort....he wasn't the biggest fan of the iodine mouthwash though, and can't blame him!

Twiglet please don't read up yet on the possibilities of what it might be when you don't have a definite answer. I did this and ended getting myself very upset. My horse's diagnosis was a form of osetoscarcoma we think due to knocking his head. Of course you have to be realistic but don't give yourself more worry than you need to.
