Hi, was told to feed new horse Hi-fi lite and high fibre nuts. I am literally giving a tiny amount of each as a small token feed, as he is on good grass and doesn't need it yet. He doesn't like it though and doesn't touch it. He eats the carrots i put in and thats it.
What can i try as a replacement to the Hi-fi lite? I got him from a dealers who didn't give him hard feed and just suggested this, so not sure what he ate in the past. I thought about molli chop but that is quite high in mollasses and he is quite round at the mo as it is, and don't want him high on sugar. Any suuggestions? thankies in advance

I am giving him a token feed as he is was very unsettled (read previous posts) and it is part of his routine now. It is literally half a handful! He is being ridden 5-6 times a week and is 7. My question is what to replace with, or try. I will continue with the token feed

What about Happy Hoof (Spillers) - it's a low calorie feed (suitable for laminitics too) which has chaff and pellets already in it. My horse loves it as it has mint and other tasty things in it. Also has vitamins and minerals in it too. Basically it is a 'complete' feed but looks more like a chaff.

Alternatively Healthy hooves (Dengie) does a similar job and is just as nice, with a reduced sugar mollasses dressing on it.

Or if you just want a low calorie chaff what about Apple chaff or Cherry Chaff . These are like molli chop but lower calorie and flavoured as the name describes!

A lot of horses find Hi Fi Lite rather coarse and uninteresting - I found my pony preferred Happy Hoof to HiFi Lite, but there are other low cal chaffs you can try too. Worth ringing some of the manufacturers to see if they will send you a small sample to try.

But if you are only feeding as a token at the moment, might just be easier to give a few carrots in a bowl if that is what he likes!

Thanks!

Some great suggestions there! I may ask around on yard, see if anyone has any to try a tiny bit of. I think someone is on happy hooves (dengie) Thanks. He is so fussy. He doesn't even like polos, likits, treats (from packet) he doesn't like anything artificial and yummy, weirdo!

is sounds like you are really lucky& have a very good doer. If no feed is needed why not just give him carrots in his bucket as the token? if you were wanting to change the chaff (the hi fi is quite boring!) i think you could go for any chaff becuase fed in the quantity that you do shouldn't affect him in anyway! perhaps an Alfa chaff?

Oh yes , he loves the carrots!! thanks and will try ringing some companies, good idea.

Yes, he is in a field at the moment, shared with one other horse, the grass is very good (too good!) but it is slowly getting trashed as the field (grass) is under a year old. So grass just pulls up when wet. So am thinking for further along the line really. Thanks for advice

If he's on good grass ATM he may may simply not be that hungry. If you are feeding him what his previous owner recommended, one could assume he ate it when they had him. He's probably not that hungry, plus is still a little unsettled.

If it's any consolation my 2 yr old filly (who's WBxTB) and 16.2 hands already, is living out on good grazing too and isn't at all bothered about eating up her daily hard feed ATM. I know she enjoys the feed and will be gobbling it up once the grass stops growing and we're properly into winter, but right now she just isn't that interested. She's growing like a weed so must be getting enough from the grass, and she looks shiny and well covered so I'm not worrying about it. Just happy to be saving on feed costs for a little longer

Oh good, yes i think the grass is doing him nicely. But i bought him from dealers, they had had him 2 weeks so didn't know what his previous diet was. Also he trys to grab next doors food all the time when their bucket is left out.
