Does anyone know what I should write or have a copy of a previous contract. I am buying her for £1 so I just need something that states I have paid and that I am the new owner.

Thanks

Oooh its all so exciting, I am so pleased for you. As far as I know there should be a mock up sale contract on the bhs website. I just did one with both parties names and addresses then a short bit explaing who bought what..... ___ has paid ____ for the ownership of a 14.3hh bay tb mare called Zoom..... Both parties also need to sign with witnesses as far as I am aware.

Not sure why you need a contract to be honest, but I am sure people will correct me if I am missing something.

You only need a receipt stating the horse's name, when it was purchased, how much for and you can put something like "bought for general riding club activities, bought as seen".

Yeah just get a reciept - mine for my horse is a scrap of a feed bag that we both signed saying sold a seen !

Sure you could draw up something a little better than that tho lol

Put the Micro chip or Freezemark No. on there too if she has one!

It's usually along the lines of

I (seller name) received the sum of £1 from (your name) in respect of Zoom, bay 15hh 9 y/o TB Mare microchip etc. Sold as seen.

ETS make sure you date it too. You could do two copies and both sign both of them.

Formal contracts are more important for loans, where things can get complicated and disputes can arrise from issues like who pays for what, and what happens if one of the party wants to end the agreements, etc.

If you're buying her, it doesnt matter what amount, she's legally your property, and a written receipt confirming you've paid for the horse would be fine. 2 signed copies and that will do it...

...That is unless of course there are any special conditions to the sale ie, if you ever couldn't look after her and you needed to give her up, would she go back to her old owner - no questions asked - or would you sell her, or loan her out. I presume that would be the only thing you need to be clear on. I don't know what your circumstances are, but often we dont know what's round the corner and even though it's probably never going to be a issue, it would be better to be clear now, rather than become a mess later on.

Definitely two copies. Owners name and address, your name and address, description of Zoom and her chip/freezemark/registration number should be on there. Along with amount paid and the sold as seen bit.

TBH receipts are a bit feeble in the UK in my opinion. It's a bit more official over here because you have to produce the sales contract in order to change passport and/or breed registration papers.
