Before I go and spend a fortune on Hi- Vis, which colour stands out better pink or yellow?

Which do you prefer, and which would look best on a grey

Er.. I cannot remember now. I think Pink is better on a grey (though hopefully someone will confirm either way)

And yellow is better on a darker horse! I think yellow stands out best, but don't have a grey or ride with one, so cannot comment on that.x

Depends on where you ride!

Yellow is supposed to be better in urban areas, whilst orange is better for rural.

Pink? Don't *do* pink, but I think this is equally bright in both areas. Can't remember where I read that, though!

I have pink and once when hacking down a road a woman in a car actually stopped and commented on how much better the pink was than yellow....apparently she could see it much more clearly. Thought that was nice of her to let me know!

A survey or similar a few years ago said that pink was actually most noticeabkle. However, I have seen pink being used, and found it very inconspicious. So, yellow gets my vote

I think i would prefer yellow, since he is a boy and i dont want to confuse him lol, but was told pink stands out more so was debating buying the pink instead!

I am going to buy a neck band thing and some leg bands for hacking this winter since at the moment all I have is a yellow tabard (will proberbly be laughed off the yard but hey ho!)

I think yellow stand out better....and also people ease off the accelerator automatically when seeing this colour before they know what they have seen in case it is the police!

Dirty / old hi viz is as good as useless

I agree with HelsB that the good thing with yellow is the fact that it is associated with the police.

You could mix and match though for ultimite visibility in all conditions!

My sister has pink on her grey and I have yellow and orange on my chesnut. Pedestrians have said how much the pink stands out. I think a mix works a treat as it makes you stand out even more!

Apparently a combination is good for contrast, just to mix things up even more!

As long as it's proper hi-viz pink, and not just a "bright" pink, I'm sure it will be as effective as yellow, so it's up to you.

I have yellow exercise sheet (mesh), brushing boots with pink and reflective silver stripes on the straps and I just bought a hi-viz orange jacket with reflective strips (£19.99 from Sports Direct instead of £59.99, made by Karrimor, bargain!

) for me, previously wore yellow mesh vest with silver reflective strips.

Personally I wear yellow. After all you don't see workmen/highway patrol/police or firemen in pink - so I figure original is best and pink is probably to cater for the mentally challenged

"Tabards and waistcoats are made to BSEN471 for use at the highest levels by professionals, in yellow, red/orange and orange, and to BSEN1150 for use by leisure riders. These garments are available in bright green and pink."

... as taken from this month's British Horse mag

I wear yellow and would always advise people I teach to wear yellow in preference to other colours.

I have yellow on my bay mare and pink on my grey gelding (sorry Mac), I read something that said yellow was so common with workman that folk become desensitised to it so pink was better. I think the mixture covers all bases and most of my horses are covered by something hi viz!

Whatever the colour, SLEEVES have a huge impact, don't ask me why! Cars that used to slow down stop and cars that didn't slow down do.

I also can't recommend highly enough a full sheet on the horse. Robinsons are selling a pony mesh hi viz cooler rug which works really well on a horse with the front straps cut off and the "wings" tucked under the saddle flaps to keep it on.

I've read somewhere that yellow is more visible in general, but pink is advised for greys as it stands out more against their colour.

Well I don't know what the science/evidence is around this....But, I used to always wear yellow. I read something that said having a hat band is really good/noticeable especially if your head is moving about (say in rising trot!) This article also said that pink was especially good - So I bought a pink hat band which I leave permenantly on my hat, for schoolwork too...Obv I have another hat for competition.
I have thought about yellow and wonder if people get a bit de-sensitised to it, seeing it on building sites, police, worksmen etc. I am going to carry on buying pink (and not because I am especially into that colour as a 35 year old!). NB I am finding it really hard to replace my tabbard in the local shops. They only seem to sell jackets or waistcoats.
