We've just got a GSD puppy, he's 8 week old and has had his first injection today. Were also wanting to get a jack Russell pup, do we have to wait until GSD has finished his injections or can we get a JR who's also had his first round??

I would actually wait a few months, more importantly to build a bond with the GSD pup - two baby pups at the same time can be a nightmare, harder to train, will focus on each other rather than you. Yes, they will be company for each other, but a gap of at least a few month will make things so much easier.

Piccies please! Do you know his breeding at all? PM me if you prefer, I is a nosy biatch :p

Agreed, wait a while. You need to get training done with your current pup. Roly taught Lil everything she knows, because I had months to train him first. Two pups will be a nightmare trying to get them to focus on you for any kind of training. Much more fun to attack each other than watch mum!

Best luck to you and I know everyone will want photos!!

I agree with CC about hanging off. I just think that 2 pups will find it really hard to focus on you if they have each other. They will just want to play and training will be really difficult. Also, if the GSD is reasonably trained by the time you get the new one, it will take its lead from him and will be easier to train.

ets oops, cross posted with Kitsune

Photos please!!!

I would also wait until the GSD has basic obedience, two puppies are tough to handle together. I got J when B was already a year old and it made a huge difference, e.g. if I recalled B, J would follow so it made it a lot easier to teach J recall, if I had them in the boot of the car I could trust B to sit/stay while I got a lead on J, etc. I have also seen owners with two puppies at training classes and the puppies tend to be much more interested in each other than the owner and also re-inforce each other in their behaviours, so, e.g. they make each other feel safer so they are more likely to run off.

Yep, agree with the others here, I would definitely wait a while before getting a 2nd pup. I have only once had 2 pups of similar age (8 weeks between them) and they were really hard work, far more interested in each other than focussing on me. Piccies please of course, and would also be interested in his breeding. (Note I am just interested, not nosy like CC:p).

Right guys here's a few pics of max, these are from a couple of weeks ago, so him at 6 weeks:

don't know anything about his breeding, he's not KC registered (I know I'm a bad puppy buyer!!) but he's been checked out by the vet today as declared as perfect! Which I very strongly agree with!

Aw bless, you did get him very young though, still looks tiny!
He might end up being a longcoat by the looks of him, but they always turn out gorgeous (just not waterproof, usually :p)

I wouldn't be the biggest fan of the KC in the world but with a five-gen pedigree you can usually check through the lines for signs of hereditary problems (if you're a bloodlines geek like me :p) and parents/grandparents hip and elbow scores etc which would be a must for me I'm afraid and something a vet cannot see or predict, without x-rays at 12 months but he looks like a lovely boy and I hope you have years of happiness with him.

I know, we took a risk, fingers crossed he'll be healthy and happy for a long time, you can tell the type of breeder he came from by the fact she let him go at 6weeks!! But I see it that if we didn't buy him and give him a decent life living with us, with acres of land to enjoy and kids to play with the breeder would only sell him to someone else who might not give him as nicer life. One good point is that I saw both mum and dad who were both lovely dogs with great tempermants.

Ah, the more you hang around here the more you'll be used to me getting on my soapbox :D like I say, all the best with him, treasure him while he is this age and try not to get too nostalgic when he is the size of a small pony :p :)

He is gorgeous, does look to be a little un but as you say maybe not had the best of, bet he will come on in leaps and bounds with you. Unfortunately my GSDs all seem to be pony size, and they are bitches!

AWwwwww he is adorable
I always wanted a very dark long haired GSD when I was younger :)
He's TINY for a GSD pup but then as you say, the breeder maybe didn't give him the best
