I am going to ring up about a groom job tomorrow as I am on a gap year.

I have no experience in groom work. What sorts of questions are they likley to ask over the phone, just so I am prepared as I hate making phonecalls. Am I likley to be interviewed over the phone?

Also what sort of clothes would I wear to an interwiew, and are the interviews normally formal or informal?

Any tips much appreciated!!

Groom interviews are normally fairly informal. Wear clothes you can ride in as they may want to check this or if not wear things you don't mind getting dirty (but fairly smart) as they may want you to do yard jobs.

They will probably ask what experience you have so be sure to be honest, they may not mind that you have none and be happy to take you on as a working pupil, though this wouldn't work on all yards. Just be enthusiastic and honest, don't be afraid to ask questions of them as well, some equestrian employers can be quite cagey/reluctant to give full details so if you feel something isn't right then trust your gut instinct! If you go to the British Groom's Association website there is a very helpfull video on groom jobs/interviews/what to expect etc as well as lots of other info so would be worth looking on here if you haven't already.

Good luck :)

i worked as groom at many different yards from sj top bsja to intonational eventing yards even been to Olympic pre trails with German team:) (was fun but hard work ) regarding clothes Just go casual jeans riding boots and clean coat i find people tend to look at how you walk so look enthusiastic and not have long nails be plesente and explain that yu are willing to do the hard work involved as well as long hours at some places. good luck

Hi
Good luck firstly - Whenever we have interviewed for a groom we have basically kept it quite informal because our yard is our home as is often the case and we must be able to get on with the potential groom if we dont then there is no hope of us taking that person on, after that as someone mentioned before be honest about your capabilities, and lastly be yourself the horses and the people will respond to that as for clothes smart but functional. Very best of luck.
