Hi,

Is it legal to be able to sell a healthy, young pony to the meat man when you have an offer in writing (lodged with a solicitor) from someone willing to buy her back to save her from this fate?

If so, there is serious injustice in this world!!!

I very much doubt there is a law which says you can't. The person has a right to sell their horse to whoever they wish.

Morally though. Totally wrong. Why would they?

I don't see that it would be illegal- ultimately there should be no suffering caused by correct slaughter (sorry, I know that it isn't a word that you want to hear). I do feel your pain.

As long as the pony has not been neglected and is slaughtered humanely there is no welfare issue here. As long as the vendor owns the pony there is no legal issue either.

As mentioned above, offer the meat man a profit and he'll likely take it. He has no interest in the pony except as a means to make money, if you make it easy for him to do that he most likely do a deal.

No,nothing illegal at all here. Sad, morally wrong, and very disheartening, but not illegal.

A friend of mine had a similar issue, the owner was acting out of spite, you need to approach the meat man directly although you may not be able to buy the pony back if the owner has requested it be put to sleep. Depends on the arrangement.

Of course it is legal. In law the pony is owned by the person selling the animal, you have no right to buy the animal, the seller chooses who to sell to. Your lodging a letter with a solicitor is a waste of your time and money, which I would have hoped the solicitor would have told you.

Hi All,

Thanks for responding - I feared that may be the case, I just cannot believe someone can do that to a living creature just out of spite! This is an owner of a reputable large equestrian centre that has done this! Shocking behaviour.

Luckily someone else has saved her from the meat man and contacted me - this is the only way I found out that is where she had gone.

YorksG - The letter was already with the solicitor before she sold her - it was part of my defence letter for her court case against me for mis-selling her. Funnily enough I do not think she has a case now as her new owners love her, I'm going to see how she's getting on on Sun (pics etc will follow)
