Hi I posted earlier about my boy possibly having a loose shoe. Anyway, I rang farrier and he said he would pop by and do it in the afternoon. I said, I'm not there I'm at work and he said, that's ok he can catch him and do it?! I said no I feel really weird about it, the horses are at my home and I don't want people wandering around even though I have had this farrier many times before and trust him I don't like the thought of someone being round the horses while I'm out? Do any of you let the farrier come while you aren't there without any supervision?!

I can understand your worries as this is your home. my horse is at livery (small yard) however If im not there my blacksmith sorts my horse out - no worries. I trust him to do this and he is very reliable.

Well, if he has no need to go into the house, I'd have no worries. If I trust him to look after my hroses feet, I would not worry about him being on the premises whilst I was stuck at work. Althugh I;d probably pop out at lunchtime and leave horse in stable if poss to make it easier for him,

If I knew him and trusted him, no probs. Just grateful as most farriers wouldn't entertain the idea of catching horses.Quite rightly really, not their job.

I'd have no problem as the farriers that we use round our way are trustworthy and good horsemen themselves. I'd be amazed and quite chuffed if they went off to catch my horse for me

Although mine has been known to turn ours out for us when he's done as well. Spoilt rotten huh

My farrier is always left unsupervised, albeit with a cup of coffee and a flapjack. He will turn them out for us afterwards especially in winter but he says he prefers them in just in case he can't catch them!

Ah thanks everyone, I thought I was being a bit weird about the whole thing! I was worried the shetland would barge him out of the way and escape onto the rich grass!! I think I overly worry about silly things! Thanks for putting my mind at ease!

All the time. Would not occur to me not to TBH, and I'd be really grateful for the decent service from them. What on earth do you think he's going to do - break in and steal all your stuff?! Suddenly start beating your horse?! And if he is, then I suspect it will happen anyway, regardless of whether you are there this time or not.

I can't imagine trusting someone to shoe my horse whom I did not trust to catch it from the field, replace/tighten a shoe and put it back in the field.

yep...not a problem, although mine are at yard, not at home.

I forgot to leave money for mine doing the other day ( we take it in turns to 'do' the horses for shoeings- theres 3 owners and 5 horses who share the same farrier, and I was there last time)...

.....so he did the horses, texted me a breakdown and a report and I posted his cheque off today.

He has been known to ctach and turn the the horses back out if owners can't be there...he is a star but we treat him nice and buy him McD's and chip butties to keep his strength up

SpottedCat- I think you've hit the nail on the head there, I don't think I do trust him which is why I feel uneasy about it. It's not as if there's just him, he's young and has a young apprentice and a girlfriend he brings everytime and he's always quite rude to me! I think I might look into changing farriers as you are right!!

We don't - purely as everything is completely locked up and wouldn't want to leave a spare set of keys out - that said I'd be able to flexi work if needs be or a friend up the road would come and grab them.

Can't leave ours in as OH's mare would turn herself inside out

I'm hardly ever there when my farrier comes!
I leave the po in, my farrier takes her out box ties her up does her feet and puts her back in, I then t-out on luch break. I leave money out for her and she leaves invoice in my stabble it works out really well

I absolutly trust her 100%

hmm that makes the situation different then IMO.

I hardly ever see my farrier, i've always just left my horse in her stable and he just helps himself. I trust my farrier completly and know if there's ever a problem he'd just call me.

My farrier would be really narked if I left him to it. I don't think I would feel right either just leaving him to it. It'd feel like I was taking him for granted.

I think even if he offered ( which he never would anyway)I would still make every endeavour to be there and be ready for him.

I like to think I have a really good relationship with him too - I've known him for years but it just wouldn't seem right..

It'd be like expecting my vet to go and catch the horses up when it's vaccination time It just doesn't seem right or fair.

Ooh, your farrier is a lady! My cousin wanted to be a farrier but her mum said she couldn't because she's a girl. I knew it was a load of tosh!

I really thought i had replied to this.

I dont think i am doing my job properly if a client wouldnt feel comfortable leaving their horse in my care. I have caught and turned out horse for clients although i prefer it if the horse is left in for me.

eta that this is normally for emergency appointments or prebooked that perhaps the cleint has forgotten or cannot make it last minute and i find it easier to do the horse in the prebooked slot than mess around my day or my other clients and try fit the horse in elsewhere

my farrier occasionally comes when i'm not there but oonly because he lives in the same village so if i ring him bout loose/lost shoe he says leave her in and he does it first thing on his way out, but if i book a routine visit i'm there to give him tea and food lol!!!

I'm a teacher so it's rare that i can be there for the farrier because it's not the type of job where you can take the morning off. I've had several farriers over the years at different yards and I've always explained the situation that I would like to be there but can't and they are fine about it.

I don't think it is right or fair to expect a farrier to do the job without someone being with him/her to catch/hold the horse. At the same time, if my farrier offered on a rare occasion, I would like to think i could trust him/her, it's no great relationship if you can't.

Why on earth does he take his girlfriend with him? Never heard of that one before
smile.gif
But yes if mine was rude to me and i didn't click with him i'd probably look into changing too. Why make getting your horse shod a bad experience, it's not worth it. You're entitled to swap farriers
