I've had each of my six horses freezemarked and would recommend it highly, it is the best preventative measure you can do for your horse to prevent horse theft. With the first horses the last digit of their freezemark did not show through correctly and part of the digit was missing. I assumed this was due to operator error and maybe the iron wasn't held down for as long as the other irons. The last time with my present horse I explained to the lady who was doing the freezemark what had happened on the five previous occassions so she held down the iron for a bit longer. The outcome was that the third digit didn't come out correctly but the fourth one shines like a beacon!

Interesting thread. What about microchipping? Do you prefer freezemarking as its so obvious?
Also, does a vet freezemark or a blacksmith? I have no experience of it.

I prefer freeze branding as it's obvious, my horse is branded on her flank, for extra visibility and because she's coloured it was the easiest place to do.
There are a few companies that freeze brand horses, I used Northern brand, they're based in Cumbria.

I always always have any new horse/pony/donkey freezemarked, far better security than a chip, although a chip is a good backup. Each iron is set on individually and doesn't hurt. Some horses may fidget, so just give some treats or walk them around in a tight circle if the operator agrees (on one of mine they suggested it.)

It is not done by a vet, blacksmith or farrier, but by a trained Freezmarking technician.

Ashgrove, are Northern Brand good and do they have a website? (Will go google)

3 of mime are microchipped, the 4th ia microchipprd and freeze marked. the only problem I had with the freeze mark was my mare was ok with the first two letters but went apeshit on the 3 and 4th, she's very thin skinned. And we found out that my welsh sec d 3 year old has a needle phobia when we had him microchipped.
