Just a quick question with the hot weather.
I keep seeing on fb pages people making their horses ice lollys with cut up apples and treats then freezing with either fruit juice or water. Could this upset the horses tummys or will it be as intended a nice cold treat?

I'm making our big cob an ice lolly :-) nice Cool treat with a carrot cut up nothing to upset her steel tummy ;)

I've made one with just cut up apples abit of apple juice and topped with water but got thinking weather it would be safe or not for my boy. He would probably just crush it and eat the apple anyway :-p

I posted same in a similar thread earlier. I too am concerned that the sudden cold would upset their tummies....although most said it was ok on that thread.

I figured there was no point in risking it. Its projecting what we as humans would want on a hot day and not much to do with the horse! I too will be sticking to an apple and maybe a spray with the hose!

Ive had my lot apple bobbing they love it!Water flying everywhere their soaked,im soaked and buckets being thrown lol.At one point my mare clapped my gelding up the back side with a half empty bucket with water and apples....his face was priceless as knew free apples where on the menu despite me trying to pick them back up to put in there buckets. Its also been a positive experience for my youngster,he doesnt mind water but enjoyed it. ;)

I can't imagine it will cause colic, provided it's a big chunk of ice that the horse has to lick/nibble, and not bite sized pieces that might get swallowed whole.
By the time it's been licked/chewed and swallowed, it will be well thawed out, and probably warmed to almost body temperature, when it reaches the stomach.

That being said, I wouldn't use fruit juice (too much sugar imo) and I wouldn't put loads of apples/carrots in either, maybe 1 apple and/or 1 carrot in 1 litre of water, as an appropriately sized lolly. :)

I've never made a lolly for mine, but have frequently shared one with them with no problems-usually the end of a callipo etc.

Did splash out and get my lad his own lolly at the garage yesterday :) he happily slurped it off the floor. Think it depends how sensitive they are-and mine certainly enjoys it. He will even beg for a bit of mine in preference to apple bobbing etc :)

I wouldn't give one all the time but as an occasional treat when its 25c even in the barn will be ok.

Not for mine!
Sounds like a shock to the system. Knowing mine, their body temp would go up to compensate and cause greater distress (like hot food in winter can for some horses).

Have to admit my horses seem to be loving this weather. They're either flat out sleeping or standing swatting flies for each other. All look lazy and happy.

I've given bud ice cubes, but that was when he bit through his tongue, so needed to get the swelling down in the height if summer so he could eat and drink. Bute wasn't enough. I don't really see how it would cool them off though? We eat an ice lolly, 2 minutes later we're hot. Bring them in, give them a shower and keep them in a cool stable for the day if they're really hot. If not leave them out with loads of water and lots of trees. Bud has just stayed under his tree and I've moved his water there. I'll leave him to keep cool that way. Ice cubes didn't cool him off last summer at all :-(

Think it will be ok if you feed it to them, mine loves It she will happily eat it all day ,but only as an occasional treat and make sure they don't take big bites as big bites are sure to cause colic, and this is the recipe that I use: One apple sliced thin one carrot sliced one banana sliced (Yes they can have banana and mine loves it) A hand full of black berries topped up with water in a pot and frozen and I put a few polo mints in as they really come out in water and ice is frozen water and sometimes I add some grass and a few bits of feed

Someone resurrected this thread from 2013, buuuut my horses are doing exactly the same, although we've lost two and gained one since 2013. Time is a funny thing ...
my mare would have been 3 years old when I last responded to this thread, eeek! Still cute. Now a ridden monster!
