Hi, I'm picking up a new pony next week, he's just 14hh and is quite cobby, all my other horses are huge compared to him so I havn't got a clue what rug size he will be, I'm thinking 5.6" would that be ok?

Your best bet is to ask the current owner what size rugs he has. My friend has 2 cobs, 1 is 14hh and the other is 14.2hh, the small one has 5ft6 rugs whereas the bigger one has 6th rugs so it depends really. :)

As others have said, check with the current owner, that's your best bet!

My 14.3 Arab x Cob (fairly lightweight build - similar to NF - it's her in my avatar) takes 6'3 rugs (which fit perfectly length wise from shoulder to hind quarters, but height wise they tend to come down to her knees!), and my 15.1 sec D is inbetween 6'3 and 6'6. He has huge shoulders and although 6'3 is okish length wise, they do tend to rub on his shoulders whereas 6'6 hangs off the back of him a bit! I prefer him in 6'6 though.

:)

Sorry should of said, he hasn't worn a rug before, but I want to get a light weight for the bad weather and then rug him properly next year.

In that case measure him after you've got him home or better still borrow a few rugs from friends to try on him. If he's super fluffy, you might not need to rug him this winter and a borrowed rug would be fine for 'rug training'. ;)

Thanks for your replies, I dont know anyone with a horse the same size to lend me a rug unfortunately, our smallest horse has a 6'3ft rug and she's a lot bigger than my new chap.
I was hoping to get a cheap second hand one in case he trashes it! and i wanted to get him one before he arrived, although he is used to living out without one I dont like it and id rather he had something on when its really cold. I may get a 5'9ft and hope that fits.

14.1hh (ish) Highland here, not overly huge boy but chunky. Takes a 6ft in 99% of his rugs.
14hh Cob (friends) takes a 6,3ft in 99% of his.

If you look into my album, you'll see what kind of size my pudding is. :D:D
