Just adopted a dog and she is very loud in the kennel. She is a year old husky/collie mix. She loves the kennel when I am in the room. Her kennel is right next to my bed. When I was gone for an hour she managed to break out of her wire kennel and drag all my sheets and blanket off my bed into her kennel and rip them to shreds. I tested her last night in the kennel while I was home and she cried for an hour straight. People told me to just leave her and that she would quiet down, but that was not the case. Just today she figured out how to be an escape artist and has done it twice already. At night, she is quiet and doesnt try to get out. It is only when I leave. Is there anybody that can give me any advice on what to do to make her not go into panic/escape mode when I am gone. It is not safe for her to be out of the kennel in a new place. I dont want her to get into anything. I hope someone can help me. I am going to be studying to become an animal trainer so trying different techniques is going to help me a lot! Thank you!

couple of things spring to mind; has she ever been in a cage/crate before? I wouldnt be putting her in it for long periods, just feed her in there and make it a positive association. Why does she have to be in the cage while you are there:confused:

IF she has been properly introduced and aclimatised to being in the cage and you are making sure she isnt shut in for too long then yes, I would agree to ignore any noise and keep her distracted with chews/toys. She shouldnt be able to break out, leadrope clips or caribinas on the doors will sort that.

also - one heck of a mix there ;) Id suggest getting some help from an experienced trainer if you havent already.

She has not been used to a house setting at all. Has been living outside. I put her in the kennel when I am home, when I can not watch her. Having her is like having a puppy. Not housetrained or anything. I have her sleep in the kennel at night to get her used to it and so she doesnt destroy anything when I am sleeping. During the day, I have been trying to get her used to it while I am home a couple times a day. She needs to really be treated like an overgrown puppy because she needs to be trained from scratch. A puppy should not be left alone in a house because most likely they will get into things. That is why, to me, it is important that she is ok in the kennel when I am not home. Hope that makes sense.

Yep, crates are great - but you need to introduce them properly.
Cayla on here has a crate training guide which she might be able to send you if you ask nicely :D

You need to be popping her in and out for short periods, leaving her in there with something awesome like a frozen stuffed Kong or a big bone or some chicken wings etc.
The dog has to think of it as a cool den to chill out in rather than that place you get shut when the people go out.

My dog is a year now and he is just sleeping in his crate while I type this, make some food, watch TV, he had a run at the beach earlier so is nice and zonked. He'll come out for a bit later after I eat, for some cuddles on the sofa, a play with some toys, a bit of training then bed again at about 11pm.

She is a mix of high-drive breeds so make sure she has some sort of outlet for all that energy like obedience, agility, tracking, or some other activity, even ball-chucking to begin with.

From reading your posts on the other thread, she was a street dog before? You are going to have to be very patient with her, you wouldn't just chuck a feral pony in a stable and expect him to stand there and munch hay :)

If you haven't already got it I recommend an excellent book by Jane Donaldson called The Culture Clash. I don't agree with absolutely everything in it (I do use large link choke chains, which according to the author are the work of the devil :p) but it gives a great insight into the mind of a dog.

Ok. I will look that up. Actually, she was on the street when she was a puppy. When she was 2 months old she had been saved and has been socialized, BUT she has never had one on one interaction in a home setting. I will try to slow things down and get some good treats to keep her busy. The last couple times that I fed her I have fed her in the kennel as I was told that may help. She IS scared of toys though. I had gotten her a squeaky toy and squeaked it, and now every toy she is scared of. Briefly I had forgot that she was not used to any of that....But yes, I suppose she is no different than a street dog, as she has had no real house skills and is already older.

It is called Wellness. Just started feeding it to her 2 days ago. I am going to go this weekend to pick up non squeaky toys and try a kong toy with the filler. I am hoping that will settle her. I was told to not put bones in the kennel with a dog when gone...what do you think?

It's personal preference but I have no issue leaving bones with the dog, my pup had two lamb necks today while I was out...the big dog had a knuckle bone to work on, none of ours have ever managed to swallow dodgy bone fragments but if it is something you're not comfortable with, don't do it.

What area/state are you in?

Wisconsin. I have put bones in the kennel with my other dog with no problems, but recently it seemed everyone I had talked to around here said NO!! I will most likely continue to anyways though as I had never had any problems. Just wanted another opinion.

Nothing to add on the crating side of things, just wanted to inform you that it is the rules on here for all new members that they must post pics of their lovely dogs :D
Also old members who have acquired new dogs have to post pics too of the new addition, especially if they're puppies :D

It would well be worth dropping a PM to JadeWisc as she will know more about US food brands and also dog trainers in your area if needed (the username is a bit of a giveaway!).

Why did you get a Greek stray rather than a dog out of an American rescue?

I stumbled onto the site and fell in love with the dog. Previously had been denied for dogs in the shelter near where I live because of mine and my boyfriends living arrangements and the money I make. Its sorta a long explanation. There had been a dog I liked awhile ago in a shelter in my state and I wanted so bad to save it, but did not have the fee to adopt it, and after explaining this, they still euthanized him :-( There are many dogs around me and I am aware of it. Eventually I willl adopt in the future, a dog more close to me. Dont worry! I will save more dogs!
