this saturday, OH is taking my horse hunting for the first time.

Pete has been learning to ride properly (rather than just hacking out on my lad occasionally) and has had 2 half days and 1 very long days hunting on hirelings, and will quite happily tack up and ride out on my lad (Ron) at home....

sounds ok until you realise that a) OH is not as confident as me b)isn't as ermm well padded as I am, and c)Ron is totally different out hunting!!!

i got carted last weekend in my cross-country bit, and pulled my neck muscles! am just hoping my friend will keep an eye out for them both. and that OH realises when Ron gets tired in enough time to hack home, or if shoes come off (they often do when we hunt in bogs) that he has sense to ring for a lift home.....

don't get me wrong i think its great that my totally non horsey OH has taken an interest enough to learn to ride and want to go hunting (maybe he just got fed up of running along in the muddy trail we leave behind) and to want our honeymoon to be horseback safari... i'm just worried that Ron will put him off the whole idea, or they'll hurt themselves... or someone else....

panic stations....

Try not to worry. I find my OH can sit out anything and never seems to fall off or hurt himself. He'd not been riding long when a horse in Spain carted him at full gallop down a track - as the dust in his wake cleared hubby could be clearly seen using his reins like a whip and yelling "Wooo hooo"! at the top of his voice as they hurtled along. It would have put me off riding for life - he thought it was great.

i think pete is much the same in that respect!

he did find it quite amusing in one of his lessons when the big mare he rides decided she'd had enough and started trying to spin round with him! he just gave her a good boot and growled, at which point she shot off down the school and thru the grid that he'd been trying to get her to jump in the first place!

I quite agree, my son (totally non horsey) thinks that it's 'easy' and the faster the better. He whooped it up literally in America last year when the cowboy riding out with us whipped his horse bum and off they went. He was howling with laughter and wanted more! It looked so funny and painful I have to say as he has no idea but it was the highlight of the day if not entire holiday. Although I think some of the terrifing coasters just pipped it!!

I'm sure he will be fine, it's only natural your worrying though.

My OH thinks he's John Wayne when he rides my boy, he normally gets off after 2 mins to pick me up off the floor from laughing so much!
