Hi everyone! I don't know if anyone remembers me (I can't actually remember my old name on here) but I had Ned the standardbred and then Serenity the ex racer.
Serenity went on loan 2yrs ago to an absolutely wonderful family, which is un/fortunately coming to an end. I'm so excited to have my big girl back, I'm anxious about keeping a horse again! But that's a story for another time.

My actual question is - does anyone know any R+/ positive reinforcement trainers around Powys or Shropshire? I've been training my own dogs with R+ for years now, but the closest thing I've done with horses is following Monty Roberts style training with Ned.

I'd love for someone to come out for a few sessions to get me started.

Many thanks!

I'm never entirely sure what people mean by positive reinforcement. I use positive reinforcement (clicker training), negative reinforcement (pressure and release), and even environmental positive punishment (using really solid trotting poles, so she clonks herself if she doesn't pick her feet up).

If you mean considerate training from somebody with a lot of knowledge of horse behaviour and horse soundness, I recommend Jen Nash of The Equine Method, who covers north Shropshire and north Wales, so you may just be in her area.

She isn't cheap, but she's extremely thorough and Blue enjoys every second of her sessions.

Oop, late reply! It's just as you say - clicker training, but really the clicker just marks that the treat is coming. I usually use "good!" :) I really want to do force free training like I do with my dog. I just don't want to get it wrong with Seren.
I'm used to a high drive malinois who wants to work for treats, not an ex race horse who can be a little away with the fairies, haha!
I think I follow The Equine Method on facebook! I'll have to send Jen a message. I actually think there's someone on my yard who can get me started :)
