I have two mixed terriers that I want to teach how to hunt rabbits. I live in a place where rabbits are literally everywhere. (We go spotlighting for fun and can get dozens and dozens in just a few hours) I'm mostly doing it for them to be productive and get some good exercise. How do I go about training them?

i hope you like digging! Go and ask on the Hunting Life if you get no replies here.

Edit: you do realise you need the land owner's permission before you can kill rabbits, otherwise you can be charged with poaching.

Just curious, what do you do with the “dozens and dozens” of rabbits from the few hours lamping that you do for fun?

How curious -to join a predominately horse forum to ask about lamping? You say 'we' so I presume as you and your friend/friends are getting dozens and dozens of rabbits already you don't need advice on how to train your terriers to kill do you?
They don't need to kill them, I was just explaining that they are plentiful here. That's the best way I could think to describe it. I am just trying to find something productive for them to do

I was also under the impression that it was horse and hound. If this isn't the place I'm sorry I'm just trying to keep my dogs productive

Yes, my family owns a lot of land and the farmers ask us to go do it most of the time. We always make sure we have permission. Thank you for making sure though I really appreciate it.

It generally comes pretty naturally to terriers but frankly ferrets are more successful with rabbits. The burrows they dig are very very vast. Probably better trying them ratting.
