Walked my dog over the track to the corner of the land owned by my livery yard, where the much heap is.

There is a large animal home in the muck heap, i assume it is rabbits but could be fox or badger.

However this afternoon my dog got his leg caught in a snare! I then found a second snare set at the entrance to one of the holes.

I removed the snares and showed them to the YO (who lives on site) who confirmed they had not given permission for anyone to hunt on their land.

Was this the right thing to do?

its not illegal to snare rabbits but you do need permission from the landowner. only thing i can think of is if it is badgers then they are trying to remove them without anyone knowing  is the muck heap still in use and on the yo's land ?
ETA it is illegal to snare badgers or do anything to harm them, im not so sure about foxes tho.

we empty our muck onto a trailer and weekly they take the trailer and empty it at the end of the track onto the big muck heap - so yes still in use.

It is on the YO land.

Snares are really horrible things if you have dogs in the area. My old dog almost died after getting stuck in one and ripping his throat open. Be careful x

id keep an eye out then and if it continues tell the police, not sure if they'd do anything but at least its been reported. Just make sure doggies and other such animals are kept away from the muck heap :(
oh you could put up false cctv cameras to try and deter them, or sit and wait for them to return.

I hate snares, they are indiscriminate and the family cat or passing dog can just as easily fall prey to them.

I am just suprised in this day and age they are still legal.

Without the landowners permission the people who laid these snares are trespassing and poaching.

We trap foxes and shoot rabbits.

I would never have snares while having liveries, especially without giving them warning! Far too easy for a dog to get caught in one and you have given permission for other people to be on your land, they shouldn't have to negotiate unecessary hazards. (I personally wouldn't use them full stop).

On a muckheap it's likely to be rabbits or rats living and perfectly legal to be snaring with permission.
I can't think why someone you snare rabbits or rats with out permission though.

Some "old timers" who use snares often chuck them in a muck heap, 2 reasons for this, to dull down the shiny brass/metal fittings so as not to scare the prey and to get rid of any human smell on them. Alot of people seem to think it's an old wives tale but some still do it, could it be that they were simply following tradition rather than actually snaring?
Oz :)

Was the snare free running or locking?

Locking snares are automatically illegal despite why, where etc they are placed.
