Rabies jabs

I am getting a passport for our dog, so she can travel to Europe with us. She will need a rabies jab, and I wondered if there are any side affects ? thanks !

I had a pup done before she went to her new home in Spain, she was 10 weeks old and had absolutely no ill effects at all.

Side effects are very rare. As with any other jab keep the dog quiet for a day or so afterwards.

If you are concerned ask the vet to vaccinate in the thigh.

I have always been told they have to be twelve weeks for their Rabies shot

They should be 12 weeks for a rabies jab for Pets passport. Spain may be lax though.

It may have been 12 weeks, the 10 weeks was off the top of my head , I havent got any paperwork here to check exactly how old she was. As you say I don't think they are too bothered in Spain as she didn't have to have blood tests after the jab.

You can get them done at 10 weeks here (Netherlands) but then it only lasts a year. If you wait till 12 weeks then the booster isn't due for 2 years. Freya was done at 12 weeks and had zero side effects. Do make sure you get the red collar disk as legally they have to wear that when they travel.
