Rabies vaccines?

Could anyone give me any pointers on how much these cost and how often dogs have to have them to be ok for returining to the UK? I know you have to wait 6 months after the first one or something to avoid quarentine but that's about it!

it's around £50 for the vaccine, £90 for the blood test a month later and £50 for the passport issue. they must have a vaccination every year within 365 days, not a day over or have to have all the blood test done again. can come back into the country 6months after the blood test was taken providing it says their antibody levels are high enough.

Just one thing to bear in mind though with the rabies vaccine - over in my country the vaccine is a 3-year vaccine; so make sure that whatever country you are in just have them vaccinated with a 1-year vaccine so that you can keep the dog's UK passport up and correct (that is if you are going to be out of the country for a long period of time or emigrating like I did).

I have now opted for the 3 year vaccine as I know there is no way I will ever be returning to the UK.

I have just had my boys done for their Rabies (blingy red heart shaped tag) the Vet didn't say anything about it being a three year vaccine, I shall have to check up on that. It would be good, two dogs cost me just short of $200!

I think thats quite cheap Enfys!

A friend sold a pup to a guy who had the 7 in one jab (Parvo, Canine Influenza, Distemper e.t.c) it cost him £40.00 a jab

My horsey ones last for 2 years so I'm guessing that they have the capacity to alter the strength and length of time for coverage over here?

You'd need to ask your vet which one was given but that seems awfully expensive to me - I will dig out my receipts for the last time my dogs were done and see what I paid but I know it wasn't anything like that.

Right I have all my receipts here; Clover was just given a year rabies vaccine (probably because she was a puppy) and the cost for the rabies and the initial and secondary DAPL vaccine was $84.

The old receipts for Poppy, Lily and Daisy show that they were given a 2 year vaccine and that combined with 3 Revolutions for them (a years supply each) cost $540 however Revolution is $120 each so that takes up $360 which leaves the DAPL and rabies shots for all 3 at $180, making that $60 each for both rabies and DAPL per dog.

So it seems like there are differing vaccines here offering different lengths of time of coverage. I know there is a 3 yearly one because I was chatting about it to my vet last time I was in there, but it seems that my dogs weren't given it; maybe hadn't been introduced when they were done?

Does this mean u can avoid putting ur dog into quarantine when u come back from the US? I've been putting off going over there because I can't bare to be seperated from my lab but I'm desperate to spend a year out there.

If you take your dog with you to the States then you must keep using the yearly rabies vaccines and have your dog's passport stamped by the vet who gives the vaccination. If this is all done, along with the mandatory tests done within a couple of days of your departure from the States, then yes your dog can return to the UK without having to spend any time in quarantine on arrival in the UK.
