hi

i'm a fourth year medical student & during my 5th (& final) year i get to spend 4 weeks studying whatever branch of medicine i choose.

i would love to get into race course medicine both being on course on race days & also being involved in the long term rehabilitation of injured doctors.

just wondering if anyone has the contact details of someone who may be able to help me in getting such a placement.

thanks in advance!

Sally

I used to work at a large racecourse and we had a partnership with a local GP practice who sent Doctors to each race meeting. It would be worth contacting the local racecourse and finding out which practice they use. Alternatively we used to have to have Paramedic Ambulances in attendance and they were a private company so they would travel to different courses so would see more racedays.

Maybe contact the Injured Jockeys Fund to see if they have any idea about long term rehabilitation (I assume you mean of Jockeys and not Doctors!)

Hi you might find these useful - http://www.basics.org.uk/ and http://www.medequestrian.co.uk/

Also, as a med student you can join www.doctors.net.uk . If you go to the forums, look under clinical and there is a 'prehospital medicine/wilderness' subforum that students can access - you could ask them and may find some useful contacts!

Also, try contacting events and ask who provides cover -if you contact the organisation they may consider letting you go as an observer.

Enjoy!
Fiona.

You could have a chat with Anna Louise McKinnon via the Professional Jockeys Association - they have a website. She has recently been appointed as the jockeys medical adviser or speak to Dr Turner at the British Horseracing Authority (again they have a website). I am sure either would point you in the right direction.
