Oh thats terrible

I have to be honest mind, what did he expect, they were never going to let him onto MOD land with unexploded bombs to look for a horse, however loved etc can you imagine being the people working there as he gets exploded..???

Poor neddy lets hope he's either alive or died very quickly.

One has to wonder though 12ft fencing - security maintained perimetre..horse gets in..??

Very sad

In some ways I hope someone has stolen him- unexploded bombs and gunfire aside I'm not sure how a clipped unrugged TB would cope out in the freezing temperatures we have been having

While I am not familiar with Lydd ranges. I have ,over a good number of years ,been well aquainted with an awfull lot of other ranges. On all ranges firing takes place in a carefully controlled and supervised manner. For this to happen, the range wardens and those directly supervising firing must be able to see what is going on and the idea that the range is a sort of big no go area because of unexploded ordanance, is frankly ,nonsense. There is much about this whole saga that doesnt ring true. The horse being seen on cctv entering the range. If the range is that dangerous,A) How was the horse able to get in?and B) If there was a gap in the fencing how come they were just watching it on CCTV.? Furthermore if the horse was seen entering and not seen leaving it is logical to assume that it is still in there.Or are they suggesting that there are yet more ways for a horse to get in? My understanding is that the MOD plods refused access to search, fair enough, but no one has mentioned the Range Warden . He would know the range intimately, and it would be his job to satisfy everyone that the horse is not there. If only to prevent unorthorised searches. What about helicopters,I believe the army still owns one or two. Perhaps it is just the way this has been reported, but nothing seems to ring true with my own experiences.

Having been on the ranges at Lydd (whilst in the TA), I cannot see how he has not been found. In the article it states there is no fence along the beach side of the ranges - he has most likely run this way.

Surely if there was snow on the ground at the time, as stated, it would have been easy to follow his tracks, bearing in mind no other horses enter Lydd ranges.

The statement made about him probably being shot is utter rubbish IMO - the ranges are carefully checked before they are used, scouts are positioned to keep an eye on ever square inch so that people/animals cannot just wander into a firing area.

Thats the thing about gossip ,its spread by vicious nasty people.Of course the horse was well insured ,as are most horses. Because there is no final closure yet, there will always be mean spirited people spreading rumours. It would not seem possible to me that the horses connections care any less about the poor animal than I would my own.

mike007 - you did hint strongly at foul play in your previous post and your quote:-

" Perhaps it is just the way this has been reported, but nothing seems to ring true with my own experiences. "

No, what I meant was that the MOD saying that the range was too dangerous to check etc . I really dont believe the MOD were doing all they could.I find it incredible that control on a live firing range is so lax.

OK got you!

I am baffled by the MOD's lack of concern over a possible loose horse on their firing range. And as you say the control over a firing range worringly lax.

After all this time it is possible the horse doubled back unseen into the sea and was carried out by the tide. This did happen to a friends young racehorse many years ago whilst working on a beach. The small group of horses was chased by 2 loose dogs, one dropped the lad and ran into the ocean and was unable to be saved due to the strong tides. It was several weeks before it's body was washed back to shore.

As a local person I can tell you the security on the range is not lax, I was riding along the beach one day and got too close and was ordered away in no uncertain terms. The range has been checked for this horse, by helicopter, and there is no horse on the range.
