not really a veterinary question, i have a lovely throughabred who has raced when he was younger and now in his early teens, he is really good apart from he can get very uptight in collecting rings when other horses come near he can kick out and spin round, he is very successful in the showring and getting very good results and will be ready to show at county level this year, he doesnt always do this but he is hard fpr him to settle and will scare himself anybody any experiences of this and any suggestions??
 
Have you thought about some sort of calmer? I don't mean a sedative. Look up Zylkene, my vets have been having good results with it for horses who face an anxious time ahead and it seems to really take the edge off. You don't need a prescription for it either. Here's just one link for it:

My experience is slightly different if that one ex racing mare really didn't like warming up with more than 2 others horses in the SJ practice ring, so she'd have to do it all elsewhere and then come in at the very end. A pain to do but it did avoid the fireworks when she let rip.

How about sticking a red ribbon on his tail just in the collecting ring, and whip it off at the last minute - it would get you more rear space and hopefully stop an unfortunate accident.

thanks for your replies, i put a red ribbon always in his tail as we habe had a few near misses and dodnt want anything getting hurt let alone himself, i may try a calmer for him if we are still having problems he has been really good the last couple of times but not been out last month or so due to wether so he may go backwards a little, he is also a loner in the field and dosent tend to mix well with others, also my other show horse used to panic in the collecting ring due to a accident in the field bu another horse bullying him so i knew were his behaviour was coming from so not sure if something as happened like that to him? we will see how he gets on thanks for your suggestions
