Hello

I am new to the forum (although admittedly I have been lurking in an anonymous fashion for a while) and I have decided to come out of the closet.

I am considering applying to one of the racehorse rehabilitation centres for an ex-racehorse, and wondered if anyone had rehomed one from somewhere like Greatwood, TRC etc, and if so what your experiences were?

Thank you.

They do good work. I've looked at a few at North Farm Stud and there were some good horses available.

I prefer to buy though because then there's always the option to sell and re-coup some money

In north yorkshire there a lot of racing yards and i found its worth contacting them direct. I bought twig from mel brittain - although at auction because he sends all of his there. Most will be happy to tell you about the horse and its quirks - we had a chat with twigs groom just before she went in the ring and although buying at auction is a risk you can often get them considerably cheaper. twig is my first ex racer and its been incredibly rewarding

I have also looked at rehoming an exrace horse. I looked at TRC. I know the application form is very thorough and they ask for references, assess your riding and experience.

I think it is a very worth while thing to do. You would like a horse and the horse would like a home. The horse can be returned at anytime should your circumstances change and not that we like to consider it, but should you not be here anymore, the horse will be returned to the trust and rehomed again.

I think its a fantastic thing to do.

There are manycentres which do this and its worth investigating them all.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Greatwood are excellent, we had an ex racehorse that we sent to them who had a brain tumour and had to be pts (we thought he was being aggressive due to his character, but it wasn't as it turned out) and they helped us all the way. If I wanted an ex-r, i'd go to them.
