Howdy!

Has anybody bought a racehorse as project, so made it an "ex-racehorse", then tried racing it again themselves? I only ask as the place I got mine from have commented that both of mine (now 3.5 and 5yrs) would probably have a really good chance at running now they've matured. Is there certain criteria to which races you enter a re-racehorse into?!

This is only out of interest - no way i'd do it with mine. One's got a dicky ticker and I would never dare push him too much and the other would probably try to kill me and neither would ever be kept fit enough!! :D

A horse can go back into training at any time, as long as they are with a registered trainer they can run in any races they are eligible for, otherwise they could go point to pointing as another way back in.

didn't know they even had to declare they had stopped racing, nothing on my boys passport. think often race horse trainers don't have the time to wait for the horses to mature as costs too much. my boy started racing at just 2 but didn't find his form until 4, then did well until injured at 7. but you see many already advertised by 3 as too slow so retired.

I had an ex racehorse on loan whilst my own horse had a couple of foals. He had a superficial injury which healed fairly quickly and I hunted him and did some riding club things with him. When my own horse came back into work, he returned to the racing yard where he had come from and ran a couple more times before retiring. He was a hurdler.

Its up to the owners as to whether they get the passport stamped not to race again and then there is a list of horses whose have "non racing agreements" in place on the BHA website.

You can do, previous owners may not like it but it depends how you got them. Two left the yard I work on in the past year, one gifted one sold cheaply as riding horses the idea being they had gone to good long term homes. The owners were devastated to see them back in training with other trainers.
They have no come back but we all thought it very rude that the new owners promised them new life's and put them back into training.

When I got mine I had to sign a form saying I would not race her,Her passport isn't stamped not to race. She was a rubbish racehorse anyway hence being rehomed :smile3:
