Was mucking out round a horse at work other day who is classed as an older and sensible mare, she is 4.

Now where i come from 4 is a baby but this mare is a TB and has seen plenty of life.

She is by the most expensive stallion in the country was backed and raced at 2/3 ran a few times, won a race but wasn't great so was retired to stud. She is now going to stud this year at 4, seems a lot for a young horse.

I have really mixed feelings over this, was wondering what you all think

I think that being bred at four isn't that much of a bad thing; she'll hopefully get time off to cook the baby, and so long as she has the right food etc, it shouldn't effect her.

I reckon it's a good thing. Gives her chance to chill and 'be a horse' rather than being in race training.

they used to break at yearling so think her lucky, they stopped it because a race horse was broken at 1 and raced, died not long later as it's spinal cord had fused together because of the pressure!! i dont think she probably cares if she is racing or breeding, i hope she makes a good mother!

I know what you mean, my boy was only 4 when i got him..... but he was sooo wise! It was like he had seen everything already, I use him as a nanny for other horses who are spooky or bad in traffic!
Which Yard are you working at? Or if you don't want to say where....... Hmmm, I'm going to guess Middleham? Am always nosey, I want to find someone who has worked where big lad was.
P.S. Can I join the Yorkshire clique?

i worked at a famous race yard and all his were 2 yr olds ... its the buisness i supose ... as for the breeding my mare is 6 now and has had a foal .. i think when she was 4

There doent seem anything overly wrong with what you are decribing. Im assuming she retired sound?
I know someone with a warmblood stud, all of the filles are bred from at 2 and 3, before being broken in at 4 and sold.
Which do you think is better?

Over in Ireland they often breed off 3 year old mares, the pony I bought as a 5 year old had bred a foal already, it is really a big deal, I think that maybe you are applying human morals? to equine. (not sure if morals is the right word, but hopefully you understand).
