Hiya

What's your thoughts on the racemasters please....? Are people happy with them. Looking at a chassis over the 3.5T as want to take 2 legally, like the safety feature of the "roll cage" in horse area and the 5 bar reinforced bulkhead as standard, I'd also be having the jump plate on as well. Do your horses travel well in them...? Anything you would change..? Thanks

We have a 26 year old Lambourne racemaster 3.5t. Ok, so it is a slow 2litre non turbo engine, doesn't carry two big horses,(fine for our ponies), and it has no living. However, it has runs well, starts and has cost less in MOT work since we bought it than my Discovery, for similar mileage.

I know it isn't comparative to the modern ones but the horse area is solid, safe and has stood the test of time without needing to be reconditioned. If it was worth it I would have the body transferred to a newer chassis because it is so well built, but we are looking for a 6 ton version with some living facilities now.

Thanks Sunshine, I'd be looking at a build on a 5T to 6.5T, so really good to hear that the build quality is sturdy.. :)

I think the George Smith ones are the same build too, definitely identical breast bars and partitions. The interior and floor of our horse area hasn't needed any work since it was built new, and it had travelled throughout Europe as a trainer's box. It has had a new ramp and fiat cab bonnet but that's all, from new.

Whatever you do make sure the money is spent on the horse area before the living.
Once at a local agri college event and saw a posh looking box- all fancy paint job and big living. Came back later to see the horse had been fretting on the box and his legs had gone through the floor, fire brigade and vet were called they had to cut it out.

I have a racemaster 3.5t built last summer & collected early September, its a very sturdy box, basic but does the job. Mounted on a Movano 2.5 turbo diesel.
Its very stable round bends & also on the motorway, either empty or full.

I choosing again, I'd have the rear door with a full tinted glass or no glass, but its not a prob otherwise. If taking something for the 1st time I gaffa tape a feed sack over it :o :D
Had thought about having a 3.9 but then re-thought on it & as am selfish person I would not be taking others apart from mine anyway......:)
Happy to answer any questions - drop me a PM if you want to as the thread may drop down & get missed :)

ps: I had a George Smith 7.5 Merc about 12 years ago, lovely lovely lorry & wish I'd kept it, but the price comparison is vast between the 2 makers. Racemaster are good solid well built lorries, but they do lack the 'finesse' of the GS ones, hence the pricing difference
