racer off the track...how much?

Impossible to say it depends on his soundness temperament and conformation.

^ That!

I paid a wee bit more than 'normal' ex-racer price for mine, as he had such a lovely temperament. He's never going to be a world-beater, but got to elementary dressage within 18 months, saintly hack etc - worth every penny to me. You pay however much you (not your friend, instructor, HHO members etc) think he is worth ;)

ETA: Mine raced a three, didn't race at four, then came to me at five. Have yet to find anything wrong with him - I think he just went on the backburner to see if he would develop any competitive instinct - thankfully he didn't!

By 'off the track' do you mean turned away after racing or has he been reschooled? My boy literally wasn't ridden between last race and coming home to me but same trainer reschools to sell on at higher prices. As an ex eventer he does a lovely job with them and they are worth every penny of the 1000 to 2000 he asks for them. They stand a better chance this way too so I think it's quite responsible when you compare 1000 to what the same stable could pull in trainers fees for the same period. I knew him and horse though. For what you describe about 400 maybe but it's worth what you'll pay. Heart of gold, safe, genuine horse is always going to be worth more regardless of where you find it.

Not racing until they are 5 or 6yo is very common for a National Hunt horse and I wouldn't necessarily be worried by that. The horse could have been started at 3 or 4yo, worked away but deemed too weak to race that season and was put away for a year. Not all racehorses start as yearlings.

I'd be paying next to nothing for a horse off the track.

Yep, I agree NH are later but flat racing does tend to be earlier and I would at least dig around before taking something who didn't follow to norm.

Exactly this.

How on earth can people give a price for a horse when really, the only information we have is that it's a thoroughbred??

This!

Bee fits that description vaguely (she's only been in 'normal' ridden work for about 8 weeks here) in these videos:

If you offered meat money for her, despite her quirks, you would laughed off the yard! Both show her first time either over fillers round a course, and doing a dressage test...

Ok, in current climate, time of year, age of horse, potential question mark over later than average start, normally marked, standard tb temp (eg bold, generally sensible, moves well ***generalisation***) then £1000 if its nice, £500 if they want it to go do another job, £ 200 if they dont give a flying. Seems to be that round here.
