Racing a horse with a neurectomy?

De-nerving does have its uses for making a horse field sound but it's banned in racing for a very good reason and I don't get why anyone would even consider racing a denerved horse  :o If it is proven to be true then a lengthy ban should be in order.

Totally agree about the field sound, even for hacking if you are very diligent, but racing one

"Wonder if the jockey knew......... "

I wonder if the owners knew..........

Good point - unlikely, I guess.
Howard is also facing charges for 3 horses on different dates being found to have anabolic steroids present.

I'm guessing he's stuffed, and rightly so. I wonder what the situation is with the vet who operated?

It looks likely he'll get a lifetime ban. Deservedly so. He appears to have little to no respect for the horses in his care.

I'm guessing he's stuffed, and rightly so. I wonder what the situation is with the vet who operated?

Sincerely hope they throw the maximum penalty at him, and even if they dont, youd hope that the Wylies take their remaining horses away. (and the others owners as well !!)

I doubt there would be any "situation" with the vet (if you mean what i read it as) - its not the vets fault that the trainer has decided to break the rules - and I dont for one second believe that he didnt know the rules about neurectomys - its been in the rules for years. The vets do their job and send the horse home with discharge notes and guidance - they cant do any more than that.

Left to me, there would be a brand new penalty invented for this one.....

Completely agree this is disgusting and looks as tho it was just by chance he got caught. How many other horses are racing in the same condition I wonder? I would also like to know if the Wylies knew about what was going on? Doubt that will ever come out. Perhaps their horses with other trainers should be checked too? I know nothing about how to test a horse for this procedure, maybe it is only possible in a post mortum? Perhaps more stringent tests are needed as with showjumpers sensitivity and if it is unnaturally high!
I am a passionate NH follower and horses are asked to risk their lives everytime they run. To add anything to that already high risk is completely unacceptable. Hope this trainer is ruined by this and if he isn't then questions HAVE to be asked of those that police racing. Wonder if quite a few horses in other yards will be "retired" in case they too are discovered to have had the treatment. ALL VERY SAD, especially for the poor bloody horses.

I also wonder how much the Wylies were aware of this.

They had to pay the vet's bills for the operation surely, so they couldn't have been in total ignorance. I've always liked and admired them and acknowledge how much they've put into racing and their apparent love of their horses, but I find it had to believe they were kept in the dark about this.

And don't lets overlook the steriods either.

It's appalling!
The vet must have known what s/he was doing...de-nerving a TB racehorse and then seeing it back on the track!!!

It is absolutely disgusting. Surely the jockey has a case against him aswell...assuming jockey didn't know then Johnson knowingly endangered jockey's life. He would want to be banned for life

I agree with many of you.
However, the case goes before the BHA next month???
Maybe we should wait till the outcome of that enquiry??

Apparently Graham Wylie did know about the horse being de-nerved,but I don`t know just how much he actually knows about horses. After all this was his and Andrea`s bit of fun with the sale money of SAGE..does`nt mean they are horse experts, just owners.
As for racing the poor thing..well at some point it was going to break down was`nt it..maybe found a home as a hack it would still be OK,but jumping at speed would hasten the result very quickly.
Think Johnson should be done for cruelty , never mind breaknig rules, poor bloody horse!
