Racing - how do they start a race

I have been reading a book recently that is based on real life experiences. In it she mentions her horse is terrified of guns, as he used to be a racehorse and hates the sound of the starting gun. Now, I have only been to a few race meets, but I am yet to see one started with a gun - in flat racing it is the opening of the starting stalls that have signified the start, and in NH it is tape. Have I just been to a few odd races where starting guns weren't used - is this normally common practise?
 
Definitely not at any of the meetings (and point to points) I've been to. Flat races start in starting stalls, major NH meetings have a tape and a man with a flag, point to points just have a man with a flag.
 
You're right, no guns, silly women - not you, the author.

What's the name of this book? (I've also posted on your other post). I'm wondering if it's the same as the one waiting under the tree for me - 'Exmoor Encounters'. I hope not as it sounds as if it'll wind me up!
 
Did she previously live in London & was editor of Marie-Clare (I think)? I may have got muddled with the title, but she has moved to Exmoor & got an ex-racehorse & is living the good life.

I was looking forward to reading it, but I'm not so sure now:(
 
Lol yes that is the one! It is an interesting read, but occasionally you want to shout and scream at the book. For example - she tells he collie to stop eating sheep and he does because she asked him to.... She lives in the middle of exmoor national park despite actually living two miles from the border and outside the park itself... She constantly has to tell you it is her 'prada' bag (can't just say bag) or BMW convertible (rather than car).... Very irritating writing style

So this is Liz Jones again - you only have to read her endless whining about her husband leaving her to know that she is clueless. Although she is making more money than me!
