just wondering really... i have a tb who (i dont think) has ever been racing/in training. What would likely to happen if you took him to some gallops and put a racing saddle on him? would he be ok in it?
It depends on the temperment of the horse and whether you would feel secure in a racing saddle on a possible hyped up horse. It would be one way to find out if he had ever raced!
I would personally feel more secure and comfortable in my trusty GP.
i dont think the saddle has anything to do with it,i dont think he would turn into a race horse if you put a racing saddle on anymore than any other horse as for the gallops, thats more to do with his temperament not if he has raced or not
Completely agree with Riderdolly.
I ride my cob in a working hunter saddle at weekends when I'm home from London. During the week my mum rides him in a racing saddle out on the gallops with the racehorses. She can't bear to ride in my saddle as she has spent the last 40 odd years of her life on a racing saddle and feels like mine pushes her out of the saddle. I can see where she is coming from. In a racing saddle, I feel the horses body move much more, it's the same feeling as riding bareback but you have stirrups!
Although mine is a cob, he can be 'spirited' but putting him in a racing saddle didn't make any difference at all to him. It's very much to do with the temperament on how they react to new things, but I don't think a racing saddle alone will make a horse think he is a racehorse. I think you are more likely to get a bigger reaction going from racing saddle on a TB to riding saddle as the horse has to deal with the extra weight and it isn't so flexible.
A horse does not spot a saddle in your arms and think "oh that is a racing saddle so I must gallop" any more than he thinks "ah a dressage saddle, I must go in an outline". To him it is just another saddle on his back.
If I were you, I would take your horse to the gallops with his everyday GP on, that you know fits him, and he is comfortable with. Just because you put a racing saddle on, doesn't mean he will go faster.
Agrre with Earlgrey. Im an Ex stable lass.
Really the only difference is What weight the saddle is? Is it Race Exercise? Is if Race Riding? Full tree, Half Tree, Flat or NH ??
I doubt having a racing saddle could change his temperament, other than it'll be horribly uncomfortable for him.
If you get a full treed exercise saddle, the panels are tiny, the gullet really narrow and the width designed for shark fin TB who are very lean and fit. They are NOT designed to distribute weight, only to allow the jockey to balance.
If you get a half tree the problems even worse. The back end of the back tree dig into the back evey time you tilt back just a little.
I know a friends horse who was ridden in a racing saddle after he finished racing. Has back was a mess
Much nicer for you and him if you take him in the gallops with his normal, well fitted saddle.
