well we got two out of the three phases right but think i perhaps have a poorly mare
frown.gif
On the upsides, the weather was good (minus the hugely large horsefly populations that decided to make its presence felt today!), fab new course which did ask questions, and lovely flat SJing and Dressage arenas
smile.gif

To cut a long story short, dressage was ok but not special so probably about right with a 34. Put me in top 1/4 i would have thought (though that is irrelevant really!)
smirk.gif

Onto SJing and Hatts was pretty sleepy - went in and decided that EVERYTHING needed to be spooked at - she felt like a green 5yr old not a 8yr old seasoned eventer
crazy.gif
but as PN is so in her comfort zone she went clear despite that pratting around!

XC - well lets just say it was an experience. She was reluctant to really motor in the warm up and i had a feeling she may have a look at the water complex - nothing she hasnt seen many times before though. So out of the start box and immediately she spooks at the portaloo next to the start box
mad.gif
rattle her a bit and she jumps fence 1 - then veers violently right and i try desperately to get her on line to fence 2, which somehow i managed. A quad bike then came past (like she hasnt seen one of those before!) and she started veering towards it while i was trying to turn the other way. Reluctantly she turned left and popped 3 into the woods. Jumped ok to the corner at 7ish but id had to smack her twice by this point to get her listening. jumped the corner, coffin complex and curving brushing things fine. then we turned back away from home and she slowed right down into the hanging log - sooo unlike her, she's really not a nappy mare and she does like her XC despite her protests! Onto the water complex and i really rode her into the narrow roll top and she just dithered 4 strides and and slithered into the bottom of it. Represented her and poor girlie decided instead of stopping or jumping it, she was going to sit right on top of it
frown.gif
so we retired at this point.
frown.gif
i walked her through the water which she obligingly did and we made our sorry walk home.

Turns out she managed to stud herself in the elbow while sitting on the roll top which isnt overly pleasant
frown.gif
But apart from that she just didnt feel herself. We've had a bit of a funny week really, I rode her monday in the field and she refused to canter on the left rein - odd as she is very obedient off the aids. Tuesday we had physio out who couldnt find anything serious just a few twingey bits which she weaved her magic on
tongue.gif
Then wednesday i lunged her and she was fine - usual lazy self. Thursday and i rode and she refused to canter on the left rein again. Got off, put her on the lunge and she popped straight into left canter
mad.gif
got back on and after several attempts we got the transition and we spent a while relearning trot to canter transitions on the left rein
blush.gif
Better on friday and not bad today in warm up on in test. Now we recon she was in season at some point this week so we put this funny behaviour down to her season - being a chestnut mare and all
smirk.gif
But that coupled with her foul behaviour - ie. trying to bite when putting bridle on, saddle on and rugs on and off (and yes ok she's not the most "friendly" horse but she doesnt go for people this often) combined with her nappy, disinterest with going XC today and then landing on a fence which she has mountains of scope to jump from trot if the effort/want was there....we think perhaps she may have a virus again? Unless anyone has any other suggestions

Will get vet out this week to take bloods...madam is just costing so much money
crazy.gif
but we need to know she's ok or whether poor girlie actually is feeling under the weather. So sorry not great report really, just a bit down although trying to remain philosophical!!

Large roast dinner for those who are still up
smile.gif
wink.gif

been in two different saddles and both are checked regularly so v. unlikely - but i guess a possibility although her back is not at all sore so...
confused.gif

I would guess she is coming into season with a large follocle developing on whichever side affescts her balance/bend for left canter. Could be either side depending on whether it hurts when it is stretched or compressed.

Sounds exactly like Queenie was a couple of weeks ago- just not going forward on the xc and feeling her normal self. I don't know what was up with her, but she also climbed all over a fence and so I retired- she is fine now though and was back to her normal self last week- maybe its a mare thing?

mmm Mum was thinking of trying oestress. Strange really as she's not a mare that has bad seasons - infact most of the time you wouldnt know she was having one and occasionally you can "see" she's having one but she doesnt behave badly. This recent behaviour (her continual biting and kicking out) is really not like her and has been happening for several weeks now - she hasnt actually bitten or kicked anyone in this time but she's made some pretty good attempts too! Her stuffiness started at Borde Hill 2weeks ago so this behaviour seems to have gone on longer that coming into season does??

Bit confused really and dont really know what the next steps should be without costing the earth!!

Obviously we'll get bloods done to rule that out. Then i guess it'll be worth trying a product to ease her seasons...

Have you considered hock problems- it made my mare really grouchy about tack and rugs. Its onset was really insidious,it was bilateral and so she looked perfectly sound, appeared to be tracking up and was also still jumping no problems. However when we nerve blocked it was amazing how much "push" she had lost from her hindlegs but because it had happened over such a long period of time I hadn't noticed and felt really bad. Xrayed and found tiny bony spur and had them injected and bingo no more nasty bitey mare and a nice springy trot!

I can really recommend Oestress, if i get a mare again i'll have her on this as it really helped with T. Even though she was never particularly mareish i found her so much more even tempered on this. Might be worth it even if seasons arent the main problems. Fingers crossed bloods show nothing serious.

Did you think it was a nice venue? Are you doing Eridge next??

Thank you AR
smile.gif
interesting about oestress, will def look into it if nothing else is wrong
smile.gif
Really hoping there is nothing but tbh it wouldnt surprise me if she did have another virus - similar signs to when she came down with post viral fatigue last August
frown.gif
we shall just have to wait and see!

Venue was lovely and very compact. Dressage arenas were flat as a pancake, SJing was pretty flat but quite spooky - flapping marquees and flags v. close by and also quadbikes whizzing past collecting score sheets. XC was lovely - obviously completely brand new - nothing hugely testing - it was all wiggley just round one big undulating field with a little gallop through a wood. There was a coffin complex, a pretty spooky water complex which jumped well if you didnt have a "watery" horse but otherwise caused problems. and then they had a very smart step complex - 2 steps up cut into the slope with an angled skinny brush at the top 2 strides away
smile.gif
all in all a lovely place - kind of think coomblands esque in style rather than borde hill if that makes sense?

Not doing Eridge as ground gets V hard there. Have temporarily put entering events on hold until we find out whats wrong but am meant to be doing RC horse trials qualifier in 2 weeks time and then Tweseldown PN. How about you?

Sounds like a nice course, i wonder if you can school there? Might email them....and look on map to see how far it is. Is it near Iping or am i imagining that?

I've got Milton Keynes and then Eridge, i know it gets hard but its so close to me (between my house and yard!) i can't really not do it. Plus its just miles on clock for him at the moment so will just pootle round xc if its very hard. Then Brightling after that although am just debating if i can afford to do Tweseldown between those two!!!

Its really close to coombelands - Rackham is just off the road that runs from Storrington to Pulborough.
smile.gif
Our PC is schooling there so whether they'll open it up to the public i dont know - def worth an email though
smile.gif

Good luck! I love Eridge, just wish is was a little softer on the old feet!
