Hi everyone, my two year old gelding has just been diagnosed with a damaged radial nerve in his o/s/f leg. Vets have advised box rest with antiinflams for a week and then turn him out (but try to keep him with a quiet companion and keep eye on ground, etc.). My vets have warned me that whilst most horses recover some do not and he is such a nice lad I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this and if there is anything else I can do to try to help him?

A few years ago my friends mare was kicked and was completely crippled. She was rested for a few days and then had a few weeks of small paddock turnout so she could move around. She had bute and, I think some physio. She returned to full work and is sound many years later. She was about 7 at the time of injury. The vet said it was radial nerve damage but I cannot remember if it was right or left fore. I hope your boy does well.

Yes, not my horse but one that belongs to a friend. He was found in the field unable to move his near side fore leg - at all. It took over an hour for 5 of us to get him 100m from the field to the yard as he could only go sideways with one of us manually moving his foreleg for him. He could weightbear but had no control over the limb and was very confused. Long story short - he was cross tied for 24 hours with bute and gradually regained movement. He was on bute for, I think a week, and was then walked gently in hand as the feeling gradually recovered. He's now back out in the field for daily turnout and is not even unlevel. I think his owner plans to get back on board this week, after consultation with the treating vet.

A huge relief for everyone as he is a total gentleman and really deserves his recovery.

Good luck with your youngster - the healing capacity of horses never ceases to astound me.

One of our mares was kicked and it must have caught her left elbow. We found her unable to pick up her left leg, she was stood on her coronet with the toe tucked under her.

We had to take the trailer and manhandle her in and back to the yard - I really thought we would lose her.

One vet visit later - and after anti inflams and pain killers she was considerably better the next day and sound within the week.

i had one horse with radial paralyisis. Didn't have a vet vist but spoke to on phone and was quite confedient that it was radial paralyisi as was happy to weight bare but couldn't lift the leg and there were no signs of injury or heat anywhere and the horse seem very comftable when standing. It was about 6 years ago now think box rested forabout 3 or 4 days and was back out completely sound within a week never had any trouble after that. If you looked very closely you could see a small indent near point of shoulder i guess this was where the impact was??

I have had it happen twice. The first time my riding horse was attacked by another. He made a good recovery and has done another 15 years riding since then. He was treated by the vet etc.
In the second case it was a 2yo feral pony that I took on who had been attacked by a stallion. He was so wild that it was impossible to treat him or do anything to help the condition. I turned him into a field on his own so he wasn't hassled and let him get on with it. It took about 6 weeks but slowly and gradually he become sound. His life would have been so much easier if we could have given anti inflams and bute.
good luck with your horse. It was quite horrific and worrying with ours at the time so I was suprised that they both had such good outcomes.

sorry to drag up and old post!

my horse had this about 2 months ago, couldnt walk and took me ages to get from the field to the stable I honestly thought he had broken his shoulder, but could weight bear which confused me, this was on his right fore, bute and anti-inflamms and back out within a week, sound!

he's now done it again to the other side! this cannot be normal! Again same treatment as before but he seems really down in himself! any advice!!
