Radio 2 Jeremy vine show in min. Case of the beaten car by rider

Well done to Matthew for quoting ' that all road users should be considerate of other road users' as set out in the HIGHWAY CODE........ obviously not read or followed by this Woman,,,

Not listened as at work but I never get the "they should pay road tax" line that so often gets flung about. Winds me up somewhat. I have no idea why that's the only argument they ever seem to have. cyclists don't pay additional road tax, neither does someone who may walk on a road. I don't get why some motorists feel roads are for their use only. So ignorant.

I agree and often get this said to me - my reply is that it isn't a road tax - That was abolished in 1937 (according to the BBC). It's Vehicle tax or emissions tax.
People need to understand what the tax is for before they can use that argument properly

Yes, very much this. It is now called 'Vehicle Tax'. People need to get their facts straight before trotting out that line :)

As both a rider and driver I'm finding riders are incredibly rude. I always slow down but am very rarely acknowledged.
It makes me cross and makes think why bother slowing down.
I was always taught to thank courteous drivers

I totally agree with this. I find that a lot of people don't even nod an acknowledgement when you stop or slow down, but on the other side a lot of drivers don't acknowledge me when I've trotted to a passing space or tucked my horse into the hedge so they can pass. Works both ways.

To be honest I do always acknowledge the drivers who pass sensibly but tbf we don't have to.....I stop at zebra crossings but I don't always get a nod or hand up to say thanks you... does this make me want to run them over .. no! yes its polite to do so but even if riders don't so what !... it should be the norm as stated in the highway code to pass wide and slow and treat horses as a hazard ! I hear this and the tax as excuses all the time... they are rubbish, iv passed cyclists on the road and don't wait for a wave or a nod tbh its just common sense....everyone is in too much of a hurry and if you haven't got the patience to wait an extra few seconds to pass safely then im afraid its you who should not be on the road.(not you personally lol ) ... just off to check what emissions my horse is firing out of her behind !

My argument for the moaners about road tax, MoT etc is this: my horse is MoT'd every year when she has her vaccinations, her tyres (shoes) are checked and replaced every six weeks or so, her emissions are environmentally friendly and she has third party insurance. She's physically incapable of breaking speed limits, and her brakes are better than the ones on my car.

Oh, and a car's horn is meant to be used to say "I am here", not "Get out of my fopping way".

The funny thing about this case is that the woman (who threw the crop) came WAY too close and fast to my horse a couple of months back next to my yard. Then I shouted something along the lines of 'slow down next time you pass' then she put her brakes on, think she thought about getting on the car to say something maybe? Funnily enough she didn't. My friend pointed out who the lady was. I was already to post on how I supported this woman until the article was about her! Grrr!

Ahh I didn't know it's official name, thank you very much I will be using that as a come back from now on.

I also find some riders are increasingly rude to drivers I have passed so many recently (sensibly I hasten to add :p) and not even a smile of acknowledgment. Now I would hope most drivers don't lose their common sense because of one rude rider but I can see why some would.

To poster who said about this woman's previous antics I read with my mouth open. Can't believe a fellow rider would behave like that, strange lady.

Glad I didn't hear it. I hate Jeremy Vine discussions. He nearly always has two people with completely appositional views, neither of whom comes over as totally rational. Drives me nuts. Glad the horse person came over as rational.

Actually I've never thought of that. I always pass cyclist wide & most times slow to ensure I can give them enough room safely...not once has this ever been acknowledged by the cyclist! Why is that?
I always raise my hand & smile or mouth 'thank you' to drivers who pass sensibly.

Same here, never a thank you from cyclists. And the drivers who are too impatient behind a horse should try driving along the Pilgrims Way on a Sunday behind hordes of strung out cyclists with no room to pass. We said that horse riders would be crucified if they held up the traffic that much.

To be fair to cyclists, it's probably safer for them to keep both hands on the handlebars rather than risk a wobble when a car is going past them!
