Ok, so i realise this makes me sound like a grump, perhaps i am! But I can't be the only one to dislike being subjected to other people's radios when I'm at the yard? I have a new neighbour who plays her radio on a morning, to add insult to injury it's Greg James on Radio 1, and it's loud enough that when she was chatting to me I couldn't hear what she was saying. I personally go to the yardto enjoy the peace and quiet, not to listen to someone else's taste in music

I'll go back in my grumpy hole now! ?

I hate this. At an old yard someone decided this was to happen every day and loudly and she would leave it on when she went out riding.

It drove me nuts. If i listen to music I have my earphones in.

I used to enjoy having the radio on while mucking out and doing jobs when I was a teenager working on a private yard... no-one else around so no-one to get annoyed. But absolutely hated other people's radios when on livery! So I'm with you on the grump here. Now I have mine at home I still prefer the silence these days.

I play my radio in a barn but it’s on so low I often can’t tell what’s on..it just softens the silence if a couple of us are there and want to talk to the ponies without feeling self conscious. Often Im there on my own in the morning and when mucking out I may turn it up louder. The young people at the other end of the barn have loud music on ..usually at weekends and holidays ..which I can’t sing along to but it doesn’t cause me great anxiety..except when they go home and forget to turn it off.

I can never employ anyone whose radio tastes match mine ( ie boring old fart ) I confess to turning it off when my brain is closing down .
there was research that found a link between Equine ulcers and radios on yards .

I'll occasionally listen to a podcast if I'm alone on the yard, but it gets turned off as soon as anyone else arrives. Partly because of my embarrassing taste in podcasts, but mostly because I hate being subjected to other people's noise so I give others the courtesy of removing my noise.

Not just you. I hate it. I can't stand listening to commercial radio (bloody adverts) and inane rubbish stuff that passes for music (I sound like my Dad I know) drives me potty.

That's interesting - I know people who leave the radio on all night or day when the horses are in, to keep them company. I hate it and I'm sure the horses do too.

I hate radios on the yard. At my last yard I had a saddle fitter booked, and the yard staff had this horrendous garage type music blaring out, so loud I couldn't hear what the saddle fitter was saying. I turned it off, and 5 mins later the staff turned it back on ?. Complaints were made and the radio then disappeared - bliss!! ?

I really don't like radios on the yard. It's thoughtless to force other people to listen to some one else's music or talk shows. The horses don't have a choice either.

I used to work in a call centre and they had the radio on as a "treat" for employees

It was great if they actually played a decent channel eg one that played 80's music.

Unfortunately as soon as those of us that liked 80s had a station we liked the call centre manager got wind and had it immediately changed back to Heart as she didnt like the 80's musif and claimed it was because the staff were "too young" to know any of it. It was rarely a vote what was played or even a fair mix eg 80's one week then Heart then Radio 1 then back to 80's it was purely what she wanted

I HATED heart. It was the same few songs (which I hated) on repeat throughout the day. Funnily they did do a survey about the radio once. No one voted for Heart but then they made up excuses as to why the top chosen stations couldn't be played and we were to stick with Heart!

It used to be bliss when it broke and we had no radio. Unfortunately busy bodies were very quick to report it to infrastructure and we were back to being burdened with it!

Im one of those who is easily irritated by other people's noise and used to do a job with statistics so needed quiet. Also got "cant you just block it out." No I can't im one of those annoying people that always seems to catch whenever a song i hate is on i wish I could block it out.

I hate the radio at the best of times ??
I will sometimes listen to podcasts but generally prefer the peace.

Apparently a study revealed that horses mostly enjoy and relax to country and classical music ?

I thought horses were supposed to enjoy classical music, so when my mare was on box rest, I played Vivaldis Four Seasons. It prompted quite an extreme reaction, she started pacing and stomping around her stable, only becoming quiet when I switched it off.
I really like Vivaldi, but she was most affronted.

It would be interesting to know if that is because of the music itself, or because the sort of yards where the radio is on all day tend to be yards where there is very limited turnout. I've only known the radio on all day on competition yards, so especially in winter the horses got next to no turnout (though summer was much better). It may depend on radio volume too? I think you could do some really interesting further research on this!

I have to admit I quite like having the radio on when I'm mucking out. It's a habit I got into when working on said competition yards - I'd never been much of a radio listener before that! I think when you have 9 or 10 boxes to muck out it's nice to have something in the background. Both yards were quite strict about radio volume though - it couldn't be too loud.

To those of you who don't like it - have you asked people to turn it off, or at least turn it down? People might not realise that you don't like it. Asking for it to be turned down shouldn't cause any issues, I don't think?

I go through phases, I'm on my own yard never have it loud and switch between Jack fm and Radio 4, recently though as I haven't been on the yard for as long due to horses not being in work I haven't bothered with having it on.

I feel sad that there may be lots of horses out there subjected to loud radios!!!!! ? I once went for a lesson at an allegedly good place up the top of my county. First thing I noticed was a super-loud radio playing garish pop music. It was right next to one horse's stable - they were in a Dutch barn set up, the type with concrete half walls, no metal grills or any other tall structure to deflect or absorb sound, and boy did those horses look miserable, I'll never forget the expression of the one right next to it. REALLY wanted to go turn it down. Having it on much lower, or even another one up the other end of the block also on lower, for a few hours a day, yeah, maybe ok, and comp horses need to get used to noise, music is often played at venues - but super-loud all day long - horrible!

When the YO at my yard is on hols, the stable staff have a radio on in the office while mucking out - I don't mind that, its only a couple of hours, it is next to a stable but the horse in there is used to general noise as the kids hang out in the room a lot and all the school customers are checked in there. It's not allowed to get out of hand though. Also the kids and teens sometime play music on their phones but its perfectly fine, its not for hours and hours.

I've read that horses "prefer" clasical and country music too. Also other animals - I have Classic FM on in my guinea pigs room on low volume, it covers up (a bit) any loud intrusive noise from the damn neighbours! I like it myself too - only some ads drive me insane - there's one this year where a voice yells angrily "NOT IN HERE!" at the start of the ad - omg it makes me cringe so bad!; I don't even know what its for?!!

Personally I prefer quiet, birds singing, horses munching hay, the wind, that's why I go to the countryside, its peaceful!

Not just at the Yard, I hate music (other people’s played loud enough for others to hear) everywhere. We are on holiday this week, walking around the Seven Sisters and Cuckmere Haven. There has been an annoying number of people playing music as they walk - what happened to enjoying the peace and quiet of nature?

I have the radio on most of the day indoors and I have one outside but don't have it on all day every day, I used to be at a yard that had speakers all along the stable blocks and it was on all day, we quite often broke into song together while mucking out using our brooms as microphones.

I'm pleased I'm not the only one who doesn't like it. I go to the yard to enjoy peace and quiet, listening to the birds and the stream...... ahhhh bliss!

If people want to listen to music, just put some earphones in, then everyone is happy

Speaking as someone who lives in a (otherwise great) flat but with an utterly selfish neighbour who plays very loud commercial radio currently between 12 and 2 but used to be 8-6, it is "torture" being forced to listen to other peoples choices, especially the volume ? animals don't like constant raucous noise like that, they have much more sensitive hearing than humans.

I like having the barn radio on when I groom and tack up. But if someone else is grooming and wants the radio shut off, fine.

When riding I hate the radio, it annoys me (except last winter when I was rehabbing after a ligament injury... walking in the indoor arena for 2 hours in december was soooo boring. At least I could listen to music while I did it and change rein with every new song...)

I sometimes have the radio on my phone when I'm mucking out but I'm normally the only one there at that time and I always turn it off if anybody else arrives. I usually listen to radio 2 or 4 depending on the time as I enjoy Radio 4's comedy programmes so it's mostly speech rather than lots of music and it's never loud. I hate having anything on too loud. My OH has the radio on 'deafening' in the car.
