helloo im riding the RAF halton sponcered ride on sunday, on their website they say body protectors are compulsary, im happy to ride in on if i have to but i havent in years so it will be strang, does anyone no how strict they are on this?

thanks
xx :D

They are pretty strict now on BP being worn as there has been a few quite serious falls in the last couple of years. I think some people last year were not allowed to take part from not wearing a BP.

I do miss Halton, my horse used to love the water and blast up the home straight :D

Very, if you dont have one you dont ride. A few of my friends that have done it have had bad falls that would have been worse if not for their bp. It is a great ride.

Can't understand why you even consider not wearing one tbh - 7 miles, 50 solid xc fences in varying degrees of scaryness. Loads of horses, often ridden by numpties who have no concept of manners i.e gallop past you whooping and cheering. Pedestrians walking across in the front of the jumps, Dogs on extendable leads fully extended............

Apart from that it's a great ride and I only fell off once last year at fence 48 :p

First year I went ('06?) I fell off in the warm up ring as some numpty on a small bay pony cut me up as I was jumping the fence- clearly didn't hear me scream "jumping"....About 10mins later she did the same thing to another rider who also fell off and broke her arm :(

Spockkyboy - the warm up is stupidly small isnt it ! I don't think I've ever jumped the first 3 / 4 fences when I've taken young horses as you just can't warm up properly / safely as your post shows. Hannah28 - ignore my grumblings, you'll have great time and the ground and weather look to be perfect. My mates are going round at 10 so I may go and shout abuse at them :)

I have never done a sponspored ride in a BP!

Done Halton at least 5 times - and am very jealous that in all likelyhood will not do again. Have loads of fun and remember to smile for the photographers!

ive done it and doing it again this year :-)
Last year the person riding before us got to the collecting ring without one on as was told she couldn't do the ride unless she had one on :-( so i would say wear one and some of the jumps are quite a size so i would defo be wearing one if jumping :-) also make sure you have your medical armband as that's a must too.

Doesn't help having an afternoon slot either (no choice as we travelled from N.London!) so the warm up was already churned up by that time. I have always been lucky with regards to parking trailer and always had enough room in the past to walk and trot to help speed up my warm up, but I have heard they have cracked down on this too as horses have bolted, riders have also been inconsiderate and almost cause accidents :( there was also a small area by where the cars could park just behind the start of the ride in which you could warm up too, but I think last year they fenced it off which was a shame.

Would love to go next year but current horse is not settled enough for a big ride like that and sadly I am now too far from Halton. Would take us 2 hours just to reach the start of the M1!

I have also done the "sister" ride to Halton which was the South Oxfordshire ride which was great fun too.

Yup, but the bonus jumps are 2'9 and above......last year the plane was, i think, 2'9 at it's lowest and 3'3 at it's highest. You dont have to do them if you dont want too or can just pick and choose which ones look less scary :o

The first time my sister did it with a friend the plane was 2'6 and the friend lead them over the second time they put it up to 2'9 and she realized this 3 strides out and pony went "umm mum where are your legs" and it took her another 3 goes to get over it ;) as long as you feel you and your horse can do it go for it :)

Copperpot i hope your friends horse is okay.

I'll be there watching a friend as none of ours are ready yet.

Xx

well i been given free entry so only have sponsor ship to pay .

Thanks for or the replys :) I'm really nervous was hoping to walk the course but can't so I will have to decide on the day, my pony is spooky but hopefully he will just get in jumping mode and get on with it... I hope :o

Hannah don't panic there are lots of smaller less scary jumps, lots of simple tyres and logs to have a pop over! You can always ride around the jumps if you don't fancy it- There are lots of people who simply hack around the course.

Oh my daughter is due to go at 10 with some of her friends - so if I hear someone shouting abuse then it will be you :-) I'll be the greyhaired old bat with the limp, being shouted at by my daughter on our 17h grey mare.

We walked the course today, the ground seemed fine, not too hard but some of the takeoff and landing areas on some of the jumps were not as nice as expected considering we had heard that they had done some preparation for this year.

This will be our 5th year there and it looks as if the weather will be great.
