Our yard doesnt have much of a winter turnout, just a trash paddock so horses can have a leg stretch and run about.
This afternoon i put both my mares out. One is heavily pregnant.
So, another livery comes up, i notice hes here but he doesnt usually turn his horse out unless his wife is with him. So i left my broodmare out. (his horse is a nasty thing but doesnt seem to bother with our littler mare. He's never been out with our broodmare before) I think nothing of it and carry on filling nets until i can hear my broodmare screaming frantically and see my yard owner hanging out of her bedroom window trying to get my attention.
So i run over, the owner of the gelding is stood in the doorway of the stable, watching his horse attempt to beat the seven shades out of my mare. He was backing her into the corner of the paddock, which is electric fenced and by god it has a mighty shock on it when you catch it! So my poor mare is forced into the fence countless times, being chased around by this horrible gelding and getting increasingly more upset. All i have going through my mind is premature labour and worrying about him kicking her tummy.
All the while im shouting at the horse and trying to call my mare to me while im running up the path, the owner is STOOD THERE WATCHING!!! Making no attempt to stop is horse!
So i finally manage to get my mare out, who was so stressed out shed given herself a nosebleed. I was, and still am, absolutely fuming. I walked past his stable and managed a curt 'Thanks for that' i figured it best not to let myself have a go or id've said more than i needed to.
But i was fully prepared to hand them the vets bill had there been any damage.

Unreal how some people can be so inconsiderate, what would it have taken just to ask, 'is my horse ok to go in with yours?' id've happily taken her out no problem!
Also, it would seem now that in the event, while everyone was galloping around my little mare has possibly slipped and pulled something and is quite broken.

Hope both are okay, and that the owner in question reincarnates as a... well, something really bad, okay?!

! I would have been raging especially as you say, he was just standing there, for starters I would have taken my mare out and got him to remove his gelding, based on the fact that your mares were out first .

Poor mare I do hope she is ok, how long has she left ?

What did your YO say ? At our yard mares and geldings are in seperate fields, Although now we no longer have any geldings, just mares . Saves any bother

It took every fibre of my strength i promise you. But im on a very small and quiet yard, everyone gets on and i didnt want to be the one to upset the balance! Trouble is aswell hes a bit of a novicey 'owners husband' kind of person. Although no reason for him not to intervene!

Colleen she has 5 weeks left!

was going to ask did he know any better not to turn out with your horses,he wont be doing that again and as transfixed as he was at what was going on he should of got in there to help even if it was just to open and close gate for you to get out quick. hope your mare is ok

Just reading your post, I felt so angry, being a novice is no excuse for not helping an animal in distress, or running to your aid. I do hope your little mare will be ok, well done for keeping your cool.
 
You did well to hold back, I'm not sure I could have done.
Sadly you can't undo what has happened but I do hope that your mare is okay this morning?
 
I hope that either you or YO explains to the numpty why he shouldn't have done what he did - only so that he doesn't think it's ok to do it again.

Oh my!! If that had been me the air would have been blue! Hope your mare is OK. Id be having words with your YO for the future safety of your mare & foaly to be.

So was I and still am a bit. That is absolutely no excuse for his actions. If it had been my horse I would have been absolutely mortified and dragged said animal out of the field. I'd have kicked seven shades of ... out of him just like his gelding was doing and then told him what he should have done if he could still hear and see me through his swollen head.

Doesn't matter if it's a quiet friendly yard - it's not going to be unless he picks up his game before he annoys someone else or his horse causes injury.

You're a better person than me for showing restraint and yes send him the vet bill. The YO was witness to what happened.

I hope your two are ok.
 
I would have been unable to restrain myself. What an absolute ***b. If you feel you can't / don't want to say anything for fear of upsetting the yard can your YO not give him a dressing down for being a prat?

Hope you are both ok.

Sure you will have done - but have you spoken to your vet?

As she is so close to foaling it might be an ideal to have a check over even if everything is found to be ok.
 
God I am so angry on your behalf I want to slaughter this idiot! What a complete and utter ****!

I wouild have had to say more but you are probably right, I still would not let it go though and would wait until I had calmed down and then have a discussion with him.

Poor little mare, hope she is OK.
 
Hi everyone, thanks for replies.
Broodmare seems alright this morning, and baby is still kicking away so im relieved!
Not so sure about little mare as yet, because we cant tell if shes still broken until my little sister gets on to ride so we'll find out if we need the vet later on tonight.
I really hope she doesnt, shes a nervous mare at the best of times and we've only just gained her trust really. A setback isnt really what i need

I really hope both your mares are ok, but I have to ask, did the YO come out and say anything to him or check your horse was ok. What an idiot he must be to turn out without mentioning it when you were there for one thing and then just to stand and watch. The YO should have given him a real roasting, she obviously thought it was a 'bad do' otherwise she wouldn't have tried to get you attention. Really hope they are ok
 
I hope that your girl is OK, for years I've kept boys and girls separate as I had a couple of 'incidents' with mine.
The subject of 'novice' helpers is a tricky one, we all need help from time to time and I hope that I have never put too much responsibility on those who have bailed me out.

We have a livery whose grand parents started to 'help'. After they had left the pony for 24hours without water or hay, turned it out into a paddock with another horse which is always kept separate, turned out in snow with no food or water... I had to say something and realised that they really knew little and had even less common horsesense. Responsibility is an emotive word, but at the end of the day the owner is responsible for her horse and if her Husband lacks knowledge or confidence she needs to address that before leaving him in the driving seat.
 
Ah the novice helper... I came across the dad of one of the liveries on our yard turning the pony out in the pouring rain in its fleece stable rug. The penny dropped when I pointed out to him that he wouldn't stand out all day in the p*ssing rain in a fleece, so why would the pony be any different. Bless 'em.
