Think its the whole thing isn't it? Need to get out and do mine tonight
Still at least its exercise isn't it, I wonder if they'll have that on a calorie counter website 'pulling ragwort for an hour - 1 000 000 000 calories!'
I always thoughts the whole thing, I am working at the yard where pickle is kept at the moment. The farm next door hasnt bothered doing any and has some as tall as me (5ft 7) we try and keep on top of it, but being surrounded by it due to stupid farmers doesn't help.
Any part of the the Ragwort plant is poisonous. It is posonous all year round.
The Ragwort plant flowers every second year but comes up every year.
Each Ragwort flower generates 40,000 seeds which are spread by the wind or by birds eating them.
Pulling Ragwort plants before they flower will prevent the seeds from spreading but the root structure is such that it will leave root fillaments in the ground that will regenerate to form a plant.
If you pull the Ragwort wear heavy duty industrial grade gloves to prevent your body absorbing the poison.
To completely get rid of Ragwort you need to spray the dry plant with a specialist chemical such as Barrier H. (Always shake the container first for 3 minutes to thoroughly mix it).
If you have a field full or Ragwort then section off part of it with electric fencing and spray the Ragwort in the fenced off section. Allow it to die and then spray again to destroy the root structure. After 14 days pull it up and burn it.
Ragwort is a culmative posion which meens that each time a horse, sheep or cow eats it a number of their liver cells will be permanently destroyed. Once 40% have been killed off the horse will die an agonising death.
If there is any Ragwort near to you or in adjoining fields ask the owners to remove it. if they faik to do so inform DEFRA and they will take immediate action against the landowner.
will have a go then, its just so fustrating we spend hours pulling ragowort, literally hours! clear our fields and I am certain we would not have these problems if it wasn't for next door. we spray fields that can be then all the others are pulled.
There are sheep grazing said land, and the place also is a livery yard with a fair number of horses
How did you report it? I thought that verges belonged to the Highways Agency. Round here Hampshire is growing its usual wonderful crop of ragwort - quite amazing it is . . . . . .veritable forests of the stuff
Highways Agency Trunk roads and motorways
Local council all other roads
Definitely make formal complaint to your nearest DEFRA office and possibly name and shame above livery yard to BHS--hopefully they will send welfare volunteer in, those horses are under a death sentence, not today or tomorrow but some time in the future
yes ragwort does kill the liver off but you will not know until the liver hits around 75 80% is not workin then by that time there is no way back your horses liver will fuction probally at 40%.
As said in a previous post it seems to be a good year for the weed! Its taken us the best part of a month, a few aching backs and a fair few tractor buckets full to clear our usually ragwort free 60 acres of the stuff!... bloody nightmare but worth it.
