does anyone have or use one of the barrels that catch rain water?(Which you can then use)is it safe to use this as horses drinking water, and if so where do you get them from and how much?

I have a water butt on my stable. I have fixed my guttering down pipe through the lid of it (there is a circle on them that you can cut out). You can either use the tap at the bottom to pour the rain water out of it or have a detachable piece of down pipe that comes off with the lid and scoop the water out with a container. It is perfectly safe for horses so long as you have a lid on the butt as otherwise the water will stagnate.
I have used mine for over a year now as I have no water in my field and stable. It is actually better for them to drink rain water than tap water anyway.
I got mine from Wilkinsons hardware store...B&Q do them aswell...thing they are £20...

We just have the stable drains going through a filter and coming straight into a couple of bins! We use a bin to get our water from anyway (very useful when the taps are frozen, as long as last person on yard at night has filled the bin up) and just scoop it out with an old supplement bucket. Never had a problem with giving it to horses, or the water stagnating (we do use about four bins' worth in the yard, and only have three water bins, so they get emptied every day).
