Looking for some advice! I moved my cob to a new yard just before Christmas and since the move she has become super itchy to the point where she is rubbing bald patches on her neck/ flank and bum. The skin underneath does not appear to be sore just bare and flaky.

I got some deosect from the vets as my first thought was lice, but in the process of getting that she has developed scabby lumps on her bum, they are like a crusty yellow. Again not sore just itchy. So I think this sounds like rain rot!

I have been applying some antifungal cream on the scabs but now don't know whether to use the deosect or wait until scabs have cleared up!

Help!!

Is she rugged? If not then it sounds like it might be rain scald (same as rain rot?). It's the same sort of thing as mud-fever, but on the body. Try and keep her dry and clean, clean rugs and gently brush off any loose scabs.
If she is bad it is worth getting the vet to have a look.
Have you seen lice? Normally they can be seen crawling around in the mane if you have a poke about *shudders*
As far as using the deosect goes, if you've not actually seen any lice I'd be inclined to hang fire until the skin is less irritated BUT I'd probably give the vet a ring and ask what they advise.

Urgh I know I feel itchy just talking about lice! But no I haven't actually seen any. She has really flaky skin, and I've used a de lousing powder and that didn't improve the itching.

It does sound alot more like rain scald, I don't rug her but since I've thought it's rain rot I let her dry out and then put a lightweight rug on her. It's nice weather today so I've took it off because she can get too hot and sweaty which I don't want! Would the rain scald be making her ridiculously itchy?

Thanks for your advice I do think I'll hold off with the deosect to see if I can get rid of her scabby bum!! ?

The scabs are probably making her a bit itchy as they heal, but her scratching patches in her coat originally could well have been caused by something else.
My neighbour's shetland always itches more in winter because the weather is very mild temperature-wise down here and he still grows a huge thick coat! She is considering clipping under his neck next year to help him cool down while leaving the top waterproof :)

Yer she is itching all the hair away on her neck, the scabs are mainly on her bum and the odd one or two along her back.
I've always kept her as natural as possible, no rugs/clipping etc, and she has always been absolutely fine but now all of a sudden this problem.

I think the stress of moving may have left her a bit more susceptible to getting poorly. I've altered her feed to try and boost her immune system. But think I'll get the vet to give me a proper diagnosis. I was reading that rain scald can take up to three months to clear, so I want to make sure I'm treating her for the right thing.

Thanks so much for your advice ?

I've got the vet coming tomorrow. Hopefully it's something that I can clear up quickly for her. Just hate seeing her so frustrated with the itchiness! She's always had such a lovely coat and now has baldy patches and she has rubbed the hair under her mane. She is also causing some destruction at the yard itching on everything lol.

Lice are just a fact of winter, they like a nice warm place to live and breed and a thick winter coat and perhaps a rug on top is perfect place.
https://www.viovet.co.uk/Deosect-Sp...MI38v36ar85wIVUdHeCh2r4Q9VEAQYAiABEgLOkPD_BwE Works really well, I think you repeat the treament after seven days. I bought a horse covered head to tail in the blooming things, and I have never needed to clip them out or wash them.

Yes I have deosect at the ready. It's supposed to be the best thing. I just didn't want to put it on yet with her having the sores on her bum. I've tried the powder but that hasn't made any difference. So hoping i can get her sorted ASAP. Thank you for the help ?

Hi everyone, vet has just left. He too thinks it is rainscald and has prescribed malaseb. She needs a bath once a week (she will not be happy about that lol) and to be kept as dry as possible. He also advised me to still use the deosect just incase, but but he couldn't find any lice, and reassured me it won't effect her scabby bum lol. I hope it works otherwise we have to look at possible allergies!!

I do feel relieved that I now know what it is and how to treat it. Thanks for all your advice ?

Years ago I moved yards and my Arab got terrible rain scald someone told me to spray him daily with Daktarin athletes foot spray and it got rid of it.

I'd read about the athletes foot cream/spray when I first though it could have been rainscald, and so I bought an athletes foot cream and had been treating the scabs with that. The vet said that was OK, but to use this wash now instead. So just hoping it clears up soon.
