Rain scald for first time i feel like a bad mum :(

Got my boy in today and found crusty scabs on his back end. Started having a look and realised typical rain scald symptoms.

I feel ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I cant believe i have let him get this, i dont even know how he got it. He has never had it before. He did get wet a couple of days when out but has been rugged since.

I am really upset and have given it all a good clean with hibiscrub and tried to get as many scabs off as i can. He is in now to let it heal, but i am terrified he will now be prone to it??

I hope i have done the right thing and will be getting the vet out monday pronto.

Any advice or anything would be much appreciated. Cookies to all. xxxx
 
I have no experience of rain scald, but don't feel bad about it.....you have seen it now, and are going to do something about it....

A bad mum would be one that didnt see it or did see it and did nothing to resolve it.....

Thank you i was nearly crying when i saw it!!! I just dont want my boy to be ill!!
 
OMG I put a post up earlier about it aswell, I was mortified when I saw it, im glad im not the only one its happened too :-(

I just dont know how to get the scabs off as my mare is very sensitive on her back at the best of times
 
Now you've cleaned it off, smother it with cream and gently massage in, it should clear up like any old scab.

He could well have still been skin damp when you rugged him, it's a classic cause of rainscald; if you're going to rug, do make sure the horse is totally dry before you do otherwise they're better off without a rug.

I know i put my post up and then had a look down the list and came across yours!! I thought how weird!!! I was so upset when i saw it but went straight down the tack shop and got some hibiscrub and a cheap bug rug as he was having flies sit on him even in his stable.
Luckily my boy let me wash his back, hibiscrub and then get the scabs off although he wasnt very happy about it. He did protest with a raised leg but i gave him a bucket of hay so he wasn't too bad.
I used a body brush to wet his back then my finger tips to rub the hibiscrub in then rinsed it all off with circular brush strokes of the body brush. Maybe you could try doing it in stages like that. All my grooming stuff, needless to say has gone in a big bucket of diluted hibiscrub!!!
 
Agree with the point about rugs on wet horses, the perfect conditions for it to start. Tea tree oil sprayed on the scabs will work well, it will also help to keep the flies off.
 
I was wondering whether to use hibiscrub, but thought it might sting her and make her even more upset as she is such a wimp, also thought about dermoline medicated shampoo, but deceided im going to try and not wash it too much and gentle brushing every day, keeping her rugged up in a fleece also applying antiseptic babycream.

I have seen worse on other horses with these scabs if you did pick them they would come off very easy without leaving a cut underneath its just there are loads and all over her, its as iff she has been splashed with something and her skin has reacted.
 
Mine got it last year, I felt awful :( my YM told me to keep it dry and brush it gently every day to get the scabs off, it cleared up pretty quickly.

Thanks Dibbin, will keep iy dry now i have treated it with HS he is staying in too so that he can have his rugs off and not get it wet and muddy. :(
