My pony is a highland. We’re in the south of England. He lives out retired no rug. He is healthy. He already has rain scald and I’m just wondering if there’s anything I can do? I can groom him but worry too much grooming isn’t good for him. Don’t really want to rug as he needs to shift a bit of weight. Is it really uncomfortable for them? It always clears up when he loses his winter coat.

I find that if you give them a good rub when the hair on the back has dried after rain, it stops it clumping and losing its protection. When mine had it I washed the area with Coatex shampoo and gave it a really good rub with cotton wool then it cleared up. I think it must at least itch and become sore over time.
