Hiya

I have just brought a pony and although really fat and healthy has bad rain scaled.. I guess from having such a wet summer

What I planned to do is bath her tomorrow morning with oodles of warm water and hibi scrub

but I wondered is this the best way forward? thank goodness she doesn't have mud fever!

Thanks in advance

I do not believe Hibi scrub is a suitable treatment for rain scald.

The best treatment is to wash the horse with antimicrobial or antibacterial shampoos recommended by your vet. If it is bad enough he might even recommend an antibiotic. I would have thought a shampoo like Malaseb would be better.

Your horse needs to be kept dry and carefully rugged.

Firstly, I'd gently try to remove the scabs...you will probably find clumps of hair come out, with weepy roots.
Then you can shampoo with a very diluted solution of Hibiscrub as it is an antimicrobial and antibacterial shampoo.
Try to dry the skin thoroughly afterwards, and try to leave it open to the air.
When turning your horse out, do try to keep the affected areas dry, by using a turnout rug.
If the pony's skin is very bad, then you might want to get a vet to see if antibiotics are needed.
Good luck.

The way I treated it was (horse been living out all winter) the length of his back was covered in it. I clipped the scabby tuffty hair off the best I could and washed it with plenty of hot water and hibi scrub got it really lathery and rubbed then rinsed with plenty of hot water, and dried with soft clean towels. It looked a bit bald but after only a few days new healthy hair started to grow back. I let plenty of fresh air get too it. Within a week I could start riding him again. This was quite a bad case too.

my mare came back with awful rainscald on her back, the vet said diluted hibiscrub... im a bit of an old beliver in salt being very good for most things.. i said this to the vet that said dont bother... i ignored him, done one side with hibi scrub and the other side with hibiscrub and salt.. the side that had the salt in it cleared within a week!

Thank you this is very very helpfull
I too thought about clipping her but then she is a native and although now going to be at night I dont want her getting a chill
once it clears up she will just be a happy hacker

Valletta, It will be fine to clip just the area with the rain scald. Trust me once you have clipped it, cleaned it and got down to the healthy skin, the hair will grow back ever so quickley. And besides up to Christmas the coats are still growing we are clipping our hunters about once a fortnight at the moment, coats growing back so quick and they are really really rugged up well and not cold. Keep us posted how it goes.
