Hi, I have posted in Veterinary recently re a problem with rainscald and have had plenty of advice on how to treat it now it's arrived (again), but I am thinking of how to prevent it once I clear it up.

I have fed Equidermis Plus in the past but I am not 100% sure how good it was as both my horses had periods of dull scurfy coats whilst being on it. I have now spoken to NAF to see if their product would help strengthen the skin to prevent rainscald, as well as mudfever in winter, and they said it would.

Does anyone have any thoughts please?

I must admit that I am naturally cautious when it comes to supplements like that (could also be described as being a little hard to part with my £!). Usually a good multivit should do the job. I would question what is in the supplements as some of them are very ordinary (mainly brewers yeast and a token amount of some herbs!) and v expensive for what they are. If your horse is getting all the vits and minerals then I would wonder if a supplement could add anything meaningful? When oh mare gets dry sensitive skin (always when changing coats) we give a scoop (50g) of microionized linseed to help her skin and coat. The oils in it are just magic! Now she maintains her gleaming coat and it helps her skin alot aswell and it looses its dryness. Perhaps this would help the skin keep itself strong and prevent the bugs getting a hold?

Thanks glosgirl, she is already on either TopSpec comprehensive balancer or Blue Chip (depending where I shop) and Baileys Outshine so she should be getting all the vits etc and plenty of oil from these.

My vet has suggested feeding something internally to try and strengthen the skin but I am at a loss as to what!

Sounds like she is getting lots of good stuff then. I would add the linseed then to help her coat and skin along. Microionized is the easiest stuff as you don't need to faff with boiling, and it is more easily absorbed and more bioavailable than just feeding the oil. It is really tricky with the supplements as all we want is to do our best for our horses, but I think the companies play on that! They don't let us know what is in them, but name them in such a way as to suggest they can help all sorts of probs!! A good multivit, with a bit of oil fed as a seed to help as needed, is pretty much all you need!

MSM's supposed to be good for the skin (and is the primary ingredient in NAF Mudgard, which is probably why they recommended it). It may or may not make a noticable difference - unfortunately I haven't tried it yet, so can't comment - but as another who has a rainscald/mudfever prone horse, I'm going to be giving it a try in addition to using barrier creams etc. I feel that if it works, its worth it! I'm currently trying NAF Immuforte, as my horse needs something a bit more powerful (he's a lemming!).

Nutkin are you trying Immuforte to strengthen the immune system for rainscald/mudfever?

I spoke to NAF today & they said to feed their echinacea liquid for a month alongside the Mudguard. However my mare won't touch it at all so I always feed Feedmarks echinacea for 2 weeks a month over winter. They didn;t mention Immuforte though so I was interested as to whether you think it makes a difference.

Oops, sorry - didn't see your reply!

The horse has been on immuforte for about 5 days now (they recommend a 10 day course), and he promptly got mudfever as soon as the ground turned muddy! It does have echinacea in it, along with MSM and brewers yeast, and a few other things, but looks like that wasn't enough. It's worth mentioning, though, that the horse it's being tried on is exceptionally prone to getting *anything* [has had mudfever x2, rainscald and cellulitis x2 so far this year, among other things]. I was using it to try and boost the immune system all round, but it looks like its not working. The next step for me is to get something prescribed by the vet, but I'm sure your horse isn't as susceptible as mine.

Also worth mentioning is that I got my tub of immuforte free as a trial, so if you think it may help your horse you can try before you buy ;)

My mare is very prone to mud fever on her one white leg, we used NAF mudguard in her feed and the cream last year and it worked really really well :-) Will definately be using it again this year. She was also already on a good diet with added oil and top spec, this was just an extra boost :-)

Thanks guys, have started on Mudguard today as I thought anything is worth a try. She is very susceptible to rainscald, mudfever etc and has just had a bad bout of rainscald which she is still recovering from.

I didn't realise how strong the Mudguard smelt but she did eat it this morning, although only 1 scoop - I don't think she will eat the 3 scoops, so fingers crossed it works :)
