Boots appears to have rain scald under her belly, its obviously sore as she wont let me touch it much. Its in between her front legs and on the side of her belly, whats the best treatment? Its still cold here at the mo so didnt want to wash her if i could do it another way. Treatment sujestions welcomed

Ok, my guess, is that it isn't rainscald. Rainscald hits areas of the skin exposed to rain and so it is unlikely to be that. My own horse first showed her sweetitch by her tummy becoming a mass of sores and bald weepy skin. The midges were biting her tummy and she had a very bad reaction to it. The midges are out now in Surrey.

If she is that sore, I would personally call the vet, to get a proper diagnosis.

The term 'rainscald' is a bit of a mis-nomer, it is caused by a a bacteria, the same one as mud fever, and does not need rain to manifest itself. It will find it's way into compromised skin, and between the front legs is an area that gets sweaty and hot, idea conditions for the bacteria to breed. I would smother the area in sudocream/zinc and castor oil cream to loosen the scabs first, then wash with hibiscub, dry completely then cover the area in aloe vera gel.

i agree with above ^^ but it might be worth getting some Malaseb shampoo off your vet to wash the scabs off it helps treat the bacterial infection too. Had the exact same problem with our old mare and it fixed it perfectly! You have to get ALL the scabs off though (this might take a few days and a few washs as some scabs will be newer and less easy to rub off etc

Flour of sulphur and lard, mix together nice creamy paste, slap on thickly, it lifts the scabs, cleans the skin and moisturises so it doesnt crack , old army remedy, works great, cheap to do.

My youngster had this, and it turned out to be mud fever from where he was kicking the mud up from the back of his hooves under his girth area whilst turned out in the field.

Treat with hibiscrub and sudocrem x

Thanks guys. Yes i used the term rainscald loosely in that sence.

Funny you should say that about sweet ich as the other youngster thats at our yard had the same symptoms last summer before developing sweet ich!! Ekkk. Bit of a worry. If this dosnt clear up then i will get the vet out tho.

I've seen a few of these recently, and I hate to tell you, but its most probably lice. Apparently there's an epidemic of them this year, and I've seen it in horses who never leave their property, and where there have been no new horses added to the herd.

Best to get the vet to have a look.
