Rainscald

Does anyone have any experience of this? It's not my horse but another on the yard, and I was wondering if it is something that has to be treated by a vet or whether it is something that can be treated with a medicated shampoo.

Also, is there a rough time period where the horse has rainscald but without symptoms?

Well my foal has it from standing under the trees neck, shoulders, back etc ( its awful )............week 8 now ( maybe more ) she is lucky that we caught it quickly and despite being a foal she was rugged. Unfortunately she then got an abscess so she was moved to a livery yard which has helped the rain scald to now flake away when she is brushed with no hair loss. Vet told me not to wash or pick at the scabs and keep dry which worked. Just to add I think the box rest has greatly helped and if she was still out 24/7 the outcome may have been a lot different.

You could wash it with a medicated shampoo. It needs to be kept dry. A cream can be used to loosen the scabs so they drop off. To prevent it keep the area dry. If horse spends a lot of time turned out unrugged, only groom with a curry comb and occasionally a dandy brush, to preserve the natural waterproofing grease in the coat (and obviously don't bath the horse). If rugged, ensure rug isn't damp inside, either from leaking in the rain or sweat if horse is too hot. You don't need the vet for rain scald unless its infected and needs antibiotics. It is caused by the same bacteria as mud fever, so you can use the same products to treat rainscald.

my stallion had really bad rainscald when i had him all over his back and hindquaters,iv had him 3 months and it is only now starting to get better..i would strongly advise trying to clip the area if you can to get right down to the skin and apply a suitable antibacterial spray..
