worth the brain splitting expense or not?

further to my thread earlier about all turnout rugs slipping forward on my TB, and having had every turnout i posses tried on him...i think its because of his huge huge shoulders-he's a slim 16.1hh but XF breastplates etc have to have holes punched to the end of the straps in order to do up round him! he's got long shoulder blades and is fighting fit-so very muscled.

would the new Optimo help combat this? its not so much that he plays/gallops a lot, just that no rugs seem to fit well round his shoulders and as soon as he puts his head down they are yanked forward as no enough extra room to allow that.

please help, i dont want to waste £250!!!

Haven't got one, but I think they look brilliant. I love Horseware rugs - won't have anything else for mine - and Rambo have to the be the market leaders. Will be interested to see if anyone had bought one of these!

if someone would promise me that it will prevent my horses bum hanging out and getting rained on, i would gladly pay it!

the concept is good but im not sure about the actual practice....i think my horses rugs move forward because of pressure from chest,to withers, over top of rug,to tail, and im not 100% convinced the Optimo dart is positioned in a way that will prevent this.

i hasten to add that his rugs DO fit well in that they dont pull on his shoulders when stood still, are not too small, and appear to have enough room at the chest, but for whatever reason creep forward when grazing and so the shoulder fit cant actually be the best?????.....have tried the next size up in 2 brands, and it was no better!

I know it would be expensive, but why don't you have a rug especially made for him so then it would fit him perfectly :) x

Well I sy any excuse to buy a new rug ;)

Just a thought/quick question. You said the MW weatherbeeta doesn't move but the HW does, do they have to same dart?! The traditional shoulder dart or the freestyle dart?! Obviously if they are identical its a mute point, but I find the freestyle dart fits Shadows large shoulders better than the old style :)

MW is the freestyle.....cant remember about the HW but thats a darn good point and ill check in the AM.......wondering about a Mark Todd as his LW combo is MT and doesnt move and the darts in the MT look to be same place as WB freestyle.

talk about minefield! good old Brucey just wears anything and its all good!

PS, given that he is small but with a well-developed front, have you considered rugs designed for Quarter Horses? They are so popular here in Germany (not just for QHs!!), and they'd probably be a perfect fit!!!

Rugs are a minefield, I could easily bankrupt myself if it weren't for the fact that WBs with a freestyle dart seem to be the only thing that fit shadow and don't rub

Ha, sorry, no, I mean there are specific brands doing Western rugs, for horses with big shoulders. I don't think 'mainstream' brands make them!

For instance, these are all designed for QHs:

Incidentally, how cool is this cooler?? I know it says 'born to slide' so obviously a dressage horse cannot wear it, but I LOVE the front!!

Hmm never seen these before.

a while ago I visited a stud that had nylon day rugs that had no buckles at the front, you put in on like an anti rub vest (over the head)...the summer sheet on that site looks similar...I've been looking for something like that as an underrug that may eliminate shoulder/whither rug now that my Bossy bibs aren't working!

FAL rugs are excellent for horses with broad chests and/or large shoulders. Make sure you get one that was made in the UK though if you do get one.

I have a pure ID and he has really big shoulders, he is very 'snug' in all Rambo's but I then bought the Rambo XL, they are amazing and nice and deep so protect the tummy too from mud. Unfortunately, they discontinued them but fortunately for you and others they have brought out the same in the Amigo Range and it is pretty much the same quality but a lot cheaper. This is it http://www.robinsons-uk.com/products/Productdetail.asp?ProductCode=51437, I don't work for Rambo, just love their rugs and I also bought the coloured modelling this!!! lol

The Rambo QH rug is quite nice, but I didn't find the turnout particularly deep - fits my narrow (but big boned) 2yo well enough but was like a mini skirt on the show mare!

The Rambo QH stable rugs are fab tho -especially the closed front, if he doesn't mind you putting a rug over his head.

The QHs are very big in front - we mainly use Amigo rugs, which altho the lowest price band for Horseware we have been very impressed with.

I've currently got a Rambo Duo which is pretty good, and a hand-me-down Rhino HW for the 2yo, but my favourite is an old Mark Todd MW turnout which is now doing duty as a stable rug for my mare cos she is so messy! They seem very roomy around the shoulders and that one has always fitted her well.

Hope this ramble helps!

thanks, i think iv narrowed it down to weatherbeeta freesyle or mark todd-iv personal experience of both and know both fit him in LW and MW so hopeing the HW will be the same.

going to tack shop to have a fondle at lunch.

does anyone think a detachable neck V combo makes a difference? all his are combo(integrated necks), and some move, some dont, so just thinking out loud.........

They aren't moving because when he puts his head down to eat, he is leaning on the front straps too much thus pulling it forward? Just wondering whether its worth only doing up the bottom front strap and seeing if it makes a difference?

i really want one but far too expensive - it is interesting nowone has commented they have bought on eon here which suggests they must not have sold many as loads of people use this forum... I wonder if the price will come down in a few months?

Mind you, people pay £300+ for boots...

Is it wrong that I want to go have a fondle...I'm desperately trying to think of a reason to buy another rug :D:D

I can only speak of WB experience and obviously on a Welsh Cob, a little different to The Captain! My preference is for the combos with the freestyle dart, however he is currently in a Tristar which has the new velcro attachments for the neck and the traditional shoulder darts and I have had no problems with rubs. Also I think the neck is bigger on the detachable necks, fit snug around the ears, whereas I find the combos are a bit short in the neck

thanks :)

you can buy me a rug instead?!

have tried doing top strap on loosest hole ie flapping in the wind and it made no difference, think its length of shoulder blade + muscles in centre of chest that are doing it.

There don't seem to be too many Rambo Optimo's out there yet; I was looking for feedback too. I suppose it very much depends on the stamp of your horse. "One man's food" and all that. And you're right, they are V V expensive, they are bound to drop in price for next winter.

How do you feel about Masta? I was a Weather B girl until the mare I bought this time last year came with one. She had to winter out due to accommodation issues last winter - yes - the coldest, harshest winter we've had for 30 years! Poor girl. The Masta was FANTASTIC. I cannot rate it highly enough. No leaks, didn't budge, roomy (and she has got a pretty strong shoulder), warm, no rips (and she was out with a youngster), not so much as a water mark on the inside. When I got her home in the March I could not believe how well it had performed.:)

I have one!!! It is the best investment that I have made!!!!! I have now ordered one for my other horse. One thing is, they do come up a little large, so my 7ft ID has a little extra room in his, but it fits much better than the XLs that I had him in. People have also commented that it looks like the rug was made for him. As my other horse is 6ft6 / 6ft9 I have gone for the 6ft6 so I would imagine it will fit nicely. Second to boot, my other horse was previously owned by the marketing manager of horsewear so he has already tried it on and I believe modelled it. Just a shame I got no discount lol!!

Every rug I have had on my horses always seems to slip to one side after rolling - these don't! I bought my first one from Rideaway as they were giving an extra liner free, I got the 400 gram and the 200 gram, this deal is now over - gutted! so I have bought the other one from ebay at £255. Hope that helps!
